especially after last Tuesdays rain erroded a lot of the ice we had.Add Sunday's heavy snowfall and we have the makings of a very hazardous situation!
There's always gonna be a few who ignore the basic problems with early snow covered ice but the old saying about mushroom pickers can be applied here with appropriate words replaced.
"There are old ice fishermen and there are bold ice fishermen but there are few old and bold ice fisherman! Be careful out there!
While its a given that snow will insulate the ice the opposite can be very true as is happening on many lakes.
A deep heavy snow on already weakened ice will cause the ice to crack allowing water to seep onto the top of the ice.The snow will insulate the water from freezing and can actually hasten the thawing especially since we haven't had any really cold nights.
In short,be extrmely cautious out there if you must go this week and always use a spud every few feet as the ice will vary greatly within a very short distance.:dizzy:
