.....I WANTED THE DEER TO GO AWAY!!!!:yikes::lol: It was a very interesting afternoon hunting that little woodlot behind my future mother-in-laws today. I got up in the treestand near the corn that I put out. (Not alot of property so baiting helped.) I've been seeing TONS of tracks in that area along with alot of deer poop. I was starting to figure that it was probably a night time feeding area because from the way it looked they lingered around in there for some time. Well, at 4:30 in the afternoon today I saw a deer about 70 yards to my left. Then a minute later there was a smaller doe behind her. They slowly worked there way towards me. The bigger one was about 40 yards out, but the younger one (Yearling) gave me a good 20 yard broadside shot. I drew my bow(Right before my shot opening) and she heard it. She looked around for about 30 seconds and froze she moved forward and I aimed just under the branch that was up high from another tree right next to me. I heard tink, tink, thunk....The deer trotted off about 30 yards from where it was. They both kept stomping and sniffing the wind. They did this for about 25 minutes. Then started to relax. (Yes I thought I'd clear that branch and it was a good percentage shot. I did hit it though. It was a clean miss. I hit 2 ft in front of her.) The kept lingering around sniffing for acorns and scraping through the snow for them. I had a couple broadside shots, but they were to far away for me. They were about 35 to 40 yards. The lingered.....and.......and.....lingered..........a nd lingered!! It was almost dark now and they were still loafing around. Then a red fox came up and started licking the corn I put out. I thought of shooting him, but I don't know the game laws with those. He left after a little while. (I had C'mere buck mixed in with it. I noticed it works.)Just after dark one came up and started eating from the corn I put out. When she was done she walked back a little bit. (The snow made it EASY to see the deer.)The other one in the background then came up and lingered around for a while. She ate some too. I'm thinking....COOL!! I can't shoot, but they are coming in. I'll wait them out. Well, then I hear more noise 2 more came up and started looking for it. Now it's freaking 7:00 clock and I want to get out of the stinking tree:yikes::lol:. So I watch the 4 deer linger around until about 7:25. I'm thinking my future mother in law is probably thinking I'm dead out here:yikes::lol:. At this pointing I'm actually praying for the deer to move on. I didn't want to spook them, but I was cold and hungry. I figured they would stick around all night. I didn't want them to know I was in the tree. So I figured I'd introduce an un-natural noise to spook them away without totally alarming them. I turned my cell phone on and covered up the light with my hand. I was going to make some kind of noise on it. Then my future mother-in-law called.......Brass Monkey. That Funky Monkey. My beastie boys ringer was going off. They finally trotted off. They didn't snork or anything, but they trotted off not totally spooked. I snuck out of my climber and walked back until I was almost to the yard before I turned on my flashlight. Well, two hours after dark they finally left. never thought I'd complain about deer sticking around, but it was making things difficult, I was cold, and I was hungry:lol:. Turns out when I got back my future mother in law was going to get a search party for me. I'm glad I got back before that.:lol:It was a cool day to hunt though. 4 deer, a close call, a fox, and a cool story.:D Now to get a deer back there this year.

fasthunter, that is exactly why I have my wife drive the atv out to my stand. The deer usually perk their heads up when she is about 250 yards away or less but are not alarmed. They usually go back to feeding until she is within 100 yards and sometimes less. I've seen deer stay until she was within 30 yards of them and me!

btw, we have tried this so I know it works. I have had her drive out and then purposely stayed in my tree stand while she drives back to the house. Most of the time the deer are back out within 5 minutes and I've seen some start out as soon as she drives away. The reason I could see these deer was that I watched where they went and there was enough moonlight to see them coming back.

Try it. It works. But one warning. It probably won't work for mayb 75% or more of the folks who drive an atv. The reason is speed and noise. Most go too fast when in deer territory and also take off with too much gusto.

I tell my wife, and sometimes it is our neighbor girl, that they are not to exceed 5 mph on the atv at all times when they are coming out and going back in and they are to take of easy. Keep the noise to a minimum.

The deer on our place get well accustomed to us and a lot of them are not afraid to the point that we can get off the atv and move around while they just stand or lay there and watch us. For instance, I've worked up food plot ground with the atv and had deer lay and watch me the whole time, including me getting off to adjust the drag and also unhooking after I finished. Last summer my wife picked raspberries and done lots of weeding while a doe and two fawns lay and watched her. Those 3 deer even got up from their beds several different days and went to the food plot to eat while she was picking berries. The total distance between the deer and my wife while the deer were eating was from 20 -25 yards maximum! Yes, it does make a difference how you act and drive when in deer country.

As I am typing this there are deer coming into our yard.

Edit: The deer just bedded. They are laying there now starting to chew their cuds. Nice!

We don't have an ATV, but I can probably have my woman do something like that for me tonight. I'll tell her if I don't call her by 5:30 to head out with a flashlight or someting. That way they don't assosciate it with me in the tree.:) Cool story too backwoods.
