I was wondering what everone uses when they go. I got my mine with a 300 Wetherby with 180 grain core loks. Had a 2.8-10 Simmons Actec scope on it. Wanting to buy a 45/70 lever action. I think that would be the ticket for close bear and boars.

45-70 is a good gun for bear it has alot oof knock down and i have seen it work well with hunters that have hunted with me.Its slower than your weatherby but speed doesn't matter when you have enough hitting enrgy. My self i use 300 win mag. but am gettting 45-70 this fall. It's a good gun for bears.

I use a Remington 30-06 with 180 gr corelock bullets. The scope is not much tho but I guess that gives me something to buy in the future.

I use a .45-70 guide gun. Nice and short for tree stand and brush. I use rem 405gr. for bear and 300gr. for deer. 1x4 scope helps in low light swamps. Shot a bear in Minn. last yr. with it, only went about 20-30yds. lung shot.Didn't tear any meat up.

Skandiaman your gun sounds like a little over kill for deer hunting but for bear your right on.

the 300gr. hollow point was a little much for deer. the slower 405gr. I used on the bear would have been a better choice. Neither tore up the meat any worse than my .270. That .45-70 really lights up a dark swamp though.

skandiaman what would you compare the recoil of that gun to.

Of the two different factory loads I've shot the 300gr. seems to kick harder than the 405gr. The recoil is similiar to a magnum 12ga. load but you won't even notice it when shooting at an animal. There are alot of custom loads that I've heard kick quite a bit but for Mi. hunting I don't think you need anything more powerful or expensive than the ammo you can buy at Wal-Mart.

Has any body tried the 300 ultra mag yet? If so how was the recoil on that.
