Anybody ever used a bike to get out on the ice? Less weight than an ATV, but still gives you the ability to get out there quicker than walking.
Just curious, I know they sell all kinds of studded tires and stuff now, but they are all quite...well...specialized.
Thinking about digging out a bike and equipping it with tire chains!

I can imagine it wouldn't be easy and biting it would really hurt (as if it doesn't already on land.) I think it would be even tougher to drag a sled or other gear out with you. Good luck if you try it!

I would think with studs this would be workable with 4" of snow or less. I doubt you could get a good enough fit on chains to make it work though. I see more mountain bikes heading north these days than boats. There's no doubt in my mind that the folks that plan a vacation around mountain biking could pull some gear out on a frozen lake with a properly set up bike. 15 years ago, I'd have been in the garage zipping sheet metal screws into bike tires rather than responding to this post:sad:

Something like that, though I'll forego the pad brakes (wont work frozen anyway) and do a wraparound...the problem with those is that they like to pop off, locking up your tire.
I thought about just doing the sheet metal screw thing, figured I'd end up popping a hole in the tire. They sell tires with studs, but they are like 40 bucks each...I'd rather spend a bit more and get a vex and walk :) Trying not to spend money on this project :)

Maybe a three wheeled bike would be a better choice and the little basket on the back could carry your stuff in

the Amish up here in my area ride their bikes on the icy roads everyday so as long as there ain't much snow it should work..i'd try studding if i was going to try it.

I read once Dave Genz thought of using a 3 wheel bike to get on lake that don't let motorized vehicles on them
