Hi all. My wife and I just decided we will be moving to Michigan from central Wisconsin due to a job opportunity. I have 2 teenage son's who along with myself live to hunt whitetail's. We will be moving to the Lansing area. I thought this would be the best place to begin gaining info on the area. Is there good public land in the area? Is it possible to lease land there? Are there big buck's there? I know nothing at all about hunting in Michigan so any info would be appreciated. Thank's Chazz

Welcome Chazz! This site is amazing, you will make many friends over time and enjoy all the info and entertainment this site has to offer. Lansing is in the 'farm' belt of Michigan. Many big bruisers are taken from the lower part of Michigan. Check out www.mi.gov/dnr (http://www.mi.gov/dnr) for state land. I know there are a few places around there. Many farmers will let people hunt as well as ample opportunities to lease land. Good luck on the job and move!

Welcome to the site Chazz.
There is some public land in the Lansing area, I'm sure there are some members here who have familiarity with it.
Most would consider southern MI to be the best big buck region in the state. Southern MI has a much higher level of land fragmentation than most likely what you have in central WI. 5-40 acre parcels are the norm, 80 or more acres would be considered a large piece in many areas. Any of the counties within an hour of Lansing could be good considerations.
Leasing land is common. Most leases will run between $10-$20 an acre for all season exclusive access.
One of the easiest ways for you to create access to quality hunting ground in S. MI is to offer something in return back in WI. If you can set someone up with quality private land hunting in WI you'll have no problem finding S. MI landowners who will reciprocate.
Once again, welcome aboard.

Welcome to MI! I'm also from the Lansing area. As everyone said, you will enjoy your time here.
I've had some pretty good luck hunting in Southern Michigan too. It requires a bit of a drive, but Michigan has a lot of beautiful scenery, so its not bad.
