View Full Version : Hauling Shappel on quad

I did a search but couldn't really find what I was looking for.
I have a new quad and purchased the Cabelas drop basket for the back to haul my buckets etc. I have a Shappel 3000 that I want to take with me but am having problems finding a way to do this on the quad especially with the drop basket on the back........
I could drag it but that would not be good as I don't have skis and not even sure if they make a tow hitch......and invaribly I can see it getting caught in the back tires somehow, if it can happen it will to me.
Any ideas short of buying a new flip over and tow bar or a dog sled???
Been looking at the front rack but just can't see that happening.....

I dunno if that rack you have will get in the way. but im getting a clam guide or frabill trekker soon. Just planned on running two 2x4's off the back of the rack on my wheeler. im just going to make the 2x4's as long as the bottom of the shanty. Put another piece on the end of the 2x4's so they look like L's coming out of the back and just strapping the shanty to the 2x4's.
Also last year we used fold up shantys. I just tossed the shanty on the quad and sat on the shanty for the ride out.

The back drop basket is whats throwing me off, as it hangs back 18 inches or so and is about that deep.......
I have seen a tree stand holder that guy's have re-rigged to haul the Shappel but that mounts on the back and my drop basket would be in the way tooo much........
Still kicking around ideas about the front rack but the folded up Shappel base is pretty darn long and wide for the front rack......
Still racking my brain, thanks for your help though.

My buddy had the same problem. He made some J type hangers that would mount directly to his rack that you could slide the shanty down into and then bungee over the top. If you have access to a welder, you could probably build something onto the back of the basket that you have that will do the same thing.

Read my mind as I was just drawing up some plans for either one for the front or the back..............now to see somebody with a welder........

Why can't the buckets go on the front rack? If there isn't a rack, put the handles of the buckets over the quads handle bars.

Well I bought the back rack drop basket just for the buckets........not thinking about the shanty...
I paid tooooooo much for the back drop basket to not use it.........
I like the j hook idea either off the front rack or the back drop rack, that way the Shappel will stand on end.........and off the back drop basket would leave the front rack for my auger...........

Why not just use some 1/2" conduit? Bend it into a J, and attach as necessary.

I can haul two for sure, possible three on the back of my quad, but a front mount idea may impede more than just your field of vision. You might also cover up you lights, and those are pretty important for those of us that go out before light and come back after dark. If you would like to see a couple photos, p.m. me and I can forward them via e-mail. Tight Lines

I took some 1/4 in. plywood, cut 3 holes and mounted inside the basket. 1 hole for minnow bucket, 1 for bucket for my vexilar, 1 for 20lb. propane tank. I use a 12ft. extention hose on the propane tank and attach to my Mr. heater in my shanty. Can run 4 to 5 days on the tank of propane. Bought a receiver hitch for my atv. Then attach a ball mount to the receiver hitch. I have no problem pulling my shanty. (note) Bought runners for my fish trap and the tow bar. Tow bar is spring loaded so your shanty will not swing under the back tires. Behind the seat on the drop basket I mount a storage box. (extras, rope. tools, battery, rods, heater head, etc.)

i have both the shappel and a fish trap and use a tow-rope for both. slide the rope through a 3ft length of 2" pvc and shorten the rope to attatch to sled/quad snugly. this will keep shanty from running up on rear of tow vehicle when stopping.

I noticed this on the "Lets see your hunting/fishing vehicles" thread in sound off.
Bounty hunter has a nice setup. Looks like it may hook up to the hitch area and leave the rear rack open for other usage. I'm sure a PM to him would explain it better. :)

I use a jet sled. I made a mount on top of the sled to hold the shanty. The sled clips to the back of my basket and the ropes are short enough so the sled cant slide under my wheels. I have a truck with a cap so the sled with the shanty still on top fits in the back of my truck and stays there all winter long.
I have pictures in my gallery if someone can help me with posting them. I can never figure how to do that.

Is there some reason the shanty is at the very back of the sled? Pull better or just done like that to give you more room for buckets and such?
Very good idea as I do have the medium jet sled.......
As far as the drop basket I have the same type on the back of my quad.....it really is a handy item...........

It's not the wind,,,, its the "ice floor". I had a shappell for years,, I have 2 Otters now,,, the difference in warmth is VERY noticeable. In the Shappell,, one lantern was more than enough for heat and light because you're actually "off" the ice,,, most of the time actually had to crack a door open . With the flip-over's you have all that exposed ice in front of you. That's really the only down-side to the flip-overs. I just carry an extra lantern and some floor mats for my feet and I'm fine.

For more room. I don't travel light. The sled is full, the basket is full and the auger mounts up front.

Well I "stole" your ideas........used two 1X4s and bolted them to the jet sled and even went as far as using 1X2 bracing under the sled handles where I bolted them on. I then installed an eyebolt on the end of each 1X4. The Shappel fits very nicely on the 1X4s and a bungie makes it secure but to assure it doesn't go anywhere I mounted an eyebolt at the front and another one at the back of the jet sled. That way I have the 2 bungies that go side to side and then the one long one that goes the entire length..............
Auger, folding seat and buddy heater fit nicely in the sled under the Shappel and rides nice and secure and no way to come out.
I then mounted two 1X4s to each side of the drop basket at the very bottom.....then mounted 2 eyebolts to them.............then I re-roped the jet sled with short rope and used some heavy dog snaps on the end of the ropes to hook to the eyebolts on the drop basket. Short ropes on the jet sled prevent it from sliding under the back tires.
I then have the 3 buckets in the drop basket and still have the entire front rack to use yet. Gonna make a wooden box for that in the future, which will hold two to three buckets if I want................
Thanks for your ideas as it works great.............took it down the private gravel road I live on and went about a half mile and nothing shook loose or fell out, pretty darn secure.
Gonna try to post a pic., took it late yesterday afternoon and it came out kind of dark.....gonna do some better ones over the weekend............hopefully I can get the pic on here..........

no problem...I just go to your picture and clicked on the thumbnail-that will make it show up bigger then I scroll down to where it says medium image -there's a box with an address in it- just right click it to highlight it, then right click it again and a box should come up-hit copy. Then go to your reply and type whatever you want then when you want to insert your pic -just right click and hit paste...

I have another pair of skis if you wanted to built a sled to put the shanty on. I have the same shanty and fabricated a sled for it, works great. I could probably fabricate a sled or attachment for your drop basket. Let me know. Al:chillin:

Really like that drop basket. Used it a lot deer hunting. Got it from Cabelas and is around $179 or so............
Whats also neat about it is that the back drop part of the basket comes off with 4 bolts/nuts and then the rest stays right on top the regular quad back rack.............found out last week that I had to take the drop part off when pulling a lawn cart around due to the short tongue...........but as I said you only need to remove 4 bolts and it pops right off................pretty darn sturdy too.............not worried in the least about pulling the jet sled as I braced the drop part with the 1X4 on each side...........
