anyone fishing and small ponds or gravel pits or anything around lansing or maybe a we bit north or south?
I have a few gravel pits i want to get on and a couple small lakes.....
I went duck hunting last saturday and was walking on what i would have guessed as 2-3 inches of ice on a river... well in a bayou anyway... but still i had to break out and inch and a 1/2 just to hit the main stream of the river... i was shocked to see how frozen the river was so i figured some of these smaller gravel pits and ponds would be frozen over a bit.... i was just hoping you guys would try it 1st ... if not ill head out there this weekend and let ya know

Checked a small pond near my house in NW Oakland County on Saturday. My guess is that it was only about 2" thick. I will check it again this weekend, with the cold temps this week. It is gonna be totally lake by lake for the next few weeks as long as we don't get more run.
Good luck and be safe.

jlcrss.... i wasnt talking about the gravel pit on howell rd if you were talking to me... i do know where you are talking about though...(i think)
i wouldnt mind meeting up with some people around here and going ice fishing.. i dont know too many people around here that ice fish and my buddy that usually would ice fish with me is about to leave the state... i have some weird times i can go though so they probably wouldnt match the average joe... i could go fri after 3 and sat after 330 and then sundays before 2 haha.... during the week is a bit better and between the 14th of december -29th i could go a bit more because i will be out of school.... it would probably have to be semi local though
although i have lived around here all my life i have never fished any of the lakes around here boat or on ice so if anyone wants someone to fish with i would be more than willing.... i love ice fishing and have a vex and clam and all that but we usually just fish up north because i always heard the lakes around here werent that great but then again i dont know anyone that has actually fished many of them haha... :help:?... pm me if anyone is interested in showing me a few lakes around here... i dont get many chances to ice fish do to school and work so you dont have to worry about me fishing out your spots either

Yea! I'll be out on Ovid a lot this year too. When I drove by this morning, there was a lot of snow on top of the ice. There looked to be a large wet line of snow going from the boat launch to the island (that you can see from Price Rd.) Be careful still!

I've been wanting to try the pit behind Total Firearms for pike.
I guess you pay them an access fee

Speaking of Lansing, Could I get info on Lake Lansing's fishery? I read a few years ago that the lake at one time was polluted and not to eat any fish out of it. Is this true? My kid goes to MSU and lives near it and wanted to ice fish it this winter. Is it worth ice fishing? perch? nice gills? pike?

Lake Lansing is fishable, no fish advisories. However the fishing really leaves quite a bit to be desired and access is an issue, it's a decent walk to the better fishing spots and they make it pretty much impossible to get a snowmobile or quad on the ice. You can access off the park on the SE side of the lake when it's open or the boat ramp on the N side of the lake. However, be concious of the hours the parks are open (not early and not late). There's a fairly good population of hammer handle pike, small gills and some moderate size crappies at time. It's actually pretty good bass lake in the spring, but for ice fishing, not really anything to go out of your way for.

Notice some familiar names on this thread, plus a couple I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. I have an idea: maybe a pre/early season MnG at a local watering hole to get aquainted/reaquainted and get even more geeked up for fishing: I fish all of the bodies of water that have been mentioned, plus a couple more in the Lansing/East Lansing area. I'll put a post in the Outings forum....maybe we can all get together and strategize on places to fish this winter:)

got on the lake yesterday on 4" at the launch ice coverage is 100% but thickness is not consistant at all. found 4 at one hole and 2" at the next one 10ft. away. lots of little gills but i didnt feel good about moving around a lot yet. On a side note, was 1 other guy out when i first got on. he was checking the ice every 15 paces or so like i do on skinny ice. just before dark several other guys came out, saw us on the ice and ASSUMED it was all good. scared me to watch them walkin across the ice like it was a parking lot.:help:

Yup gotta be careful on Ovid, springs everywhere and current that runs the lenghth of it through a twisty, indescriminate channel. Always walk with a spud out there, especially this early on.
