View Full Version : Power Pro Line
I know the soft water season is all but over in most places in the state but I'd just like to share some thought on the new power pro line I used for the better part of the last 3 months of the fishing season.
It was the new 5lb Test and I loved it. I was a fireline guy myself until the fireline tore up my guides on my ugly sticks. I tried 5lb power pro and WOW, this stuff fishes a lot like mono and is really abrasion resistant as well as easy casting even with light 1/32oz. jigs.
One thing I found to be kind of a problem is wind knots when using anything lighter than 1/32oz jig head. Really anything over 1/16oz. I had ZERO problems with. I like the moss green color but found after a while it faded....until it got wet and then it was green again, not as much as it was in the first place but not white.
I also found a polomer knot was the only knot to use with this line and you should cut the extra tag on the line as close to the knot as you can because if you leave too much the tag frays, I'm not sure if that will effect the knot at all though.
I would often fish small streams with this and caught my share of bass and nice bass on this line. I'm still a bit concerned about the visibility of the line. That could be because I'm becoming a better fisherman and worrying about stuff I never did again.
Anyways everybody I just wanted to share my thought on this line. I think it's a good line for jigging and casting small rapalas.

I have Power Pro and nearly all my bass rods. 30 lb on my baitcasters, 12 lb YELLOW on my senko rod (yellow acts like a strike detector for those light bites) and even on my drop shot rod. Can't beat the stuff. Acts like mono, stronger, thinner, and way more sensitive.

I love it. I use it on both my spinning and bait casters. i use the 50lb test for flipping and it is so strong yet so easy to flip and pitch. Whats really nice about the stuff is you can get alot of use out of it after it starts to fade i just flip it around and use the line at the bottom of the spool which is basiclly new. It is easy to untangle back lashes also. Only you have to becareful is it will cut your hand easily when try to pull it of a snag.

How is it in cold weather ? I won't use fireline in cold temps.
I didn't have any freezing when the temps were in the 40s but I've not yet used it in colder.

After reading up about the Power Pro this season, I am planning to spool some up on my new toys when next season rolls around. Aside from making sure I am tying good knots, is there anything else special I should consider when using it?
waterfoul, on your drop shot and senko rods are you using any sort of leader, or do you tie on directly?

Use a fast snap if your using rapalas or spinners and really if you plan on changing jigs using one as well. This will allow you to use the polomer knot with the snap but your baits can still move free

I loves power pro myself. I use a uni knot and it works just fine for me.

Has anybody used it in near or below freezing temps? And if so, how did it do? I am considering using it for my late season walleye hunting.

Steve, I used it for whities a couple times this year... at below freezing temps. It does carry water and got pretty stiff. But, that was 30lb line... I'd be the lighter stuff would fair much better.
Fishermanjon, I use 10 lb P-line or Seagaur florocarbon leader... usually about 6' of it or so. Very sensitive!!

We have used it trolling in late fall. It will stiffen up just as anyother line will. But works just like any other.
Im still overwhellmed by people saying fireline or braided lines trashed their guides. There was a huge discussion on walleye central on that very subject. The end results were cheap rods and cheap guides. Higher quality rods seen no problems with any of the superlines.
I have rod combo's that I buy super cheap. Like 9.99-14.99 a combo. They are strictly for friends who "wanna go fishin" and have no equipment. I have had 10 lb spiderwire stealth on them for 3 or so years now, and have no problems with the guides. But I had a $25 spoinning rod that wore grooves in the guides. I checked them with a lighter and the insert melted right out....plastic. I would not hesitate to say it is your guides not the line.

I would not hesitate to say it is your guides not the line.I'm a college student with not a lot of money so I use ugly sticks and the fireline in no time at all tore up 5, yes FIVE ugly sticks guides. It wasn't really noticeable until I checked and went to using mono with those same rods and then you could really tell. I know Ugly Sticks aren't the nicest rod out there but it's good for what I do and is cheep and durable. Since changing to power pro I've had ZERO problems at all with my guides.
The thing with Power Pro is it's round and spectra fiber, where fireline is made of dynama which is a product of Kevlar I believe so as you as you have a high quality rod then I would say you are dead on but for me, it was a matter of a better product for what I use.
I've heard people hating on Ugly sticks too but I've really liked mine. I like that I don't have to worry about if my rod gets smacked, hit or falls and I know it won't break on a fish. This will also sound weird but I like the foam grips too, I always have...I just grew up with them and cork doesn't feel right to me at all. I also like that Ugly Sticks have a good back bone in the smaller 5' models but a soft enough tip for walleye and crappie.
That's just my experience though yours may be different but that's how I see it

Ugly Sticks (from what I've seen) don't use top quality guides. But if you like em, that's your choice. As a hard core bass angler, I won't put one in my boat. NO sensitivity compared to a $15 graphite rod from any manufacturer.
But that's not what we're talking about. I've used both Fireline and Powerpro... I highly prefer the Power Pro. Stays round, doesn't fray nearly as much.

I've heard a lot of people say they aren't sensitive too, maybe because I've got used to them I can feel better I don't know  In any event putting aside the guide wrecking fireline does I still prefer power pro. It seams to be a much easer to fish line to me.

I am not made of money either. i just look a little harder when selecting cheaper rods. Some have better guides than others.
Dont worry I am not a fan of fireline either;). Another thing I love is when people say they hate fireline and all other braids ......and yet fireline is not even a braided line.

These people have never tried Power Pro!!
These people have never tried Power Pro!!Yeah really most superlines have stiff properties but power pro really does fish like mono. As as said the only thing I didn't like what it's visible. I'm not yet sure if it cost me any fish when fishing the clinton for bass but where I was fishing the water was clear as day. I still caught my far share of fish, from big gills' to bass and even a couple of trout, so I'm really not sure. This was of course the 5lb test size though and it has such a thin dia. that I can fit 150yards plus backing on my sedona 750
I have been running Power Pro on the same Ugly Sticks pulling big muskie baits at 3-8 MPH for a number of years. No guide wear, much less failure. If that don't debunk the Ugly Stick/ Power Pro myth, nothing will.

Does Shakespear make more than one "level" of Ugly Stick? Are the trolling rods (such as the ones ESOX is using) differ from the casting and spinning bass/crappie type rods?? I know there is Ugly Stick and then there is Ugly Stick Lite. But do the guides vary from rod to rod???
Now, back to the power pro... on my bass rods I run floro leaders... it's the tournament angler in me I guess... except for my crank bait rod... that is straight PP.
The Uglies I use are 7' casting rods. BWC something or another. I also have a lighter set I use for BB's, also running Power Pro. Just off the rack 45 buck Uglies.....

I tired the red last season. didn't like it so much. It turned pink real fast and my hands were died red for a couple of days. I also had a problem with pulling the red 40lb off my hooks happened 4 times. went to set hook and big release and came back with no hook and knot still in tact. never had this happen with the green. not sure if it slipped of the bend or if it broke the hooks or if it straightend them. using 3/0 gamakatsu, and once with 3/0 mustad. I switched to superline hooks, but i'm sticking with the green from now on have nothing bad to say about the green

Hey Paul..ya still lookin at plastic for your next vessel?

Waterfoul, it just shows how diverse fishing is. I know successful Bass fishermen that won't put anything but Ugly Sticks in their boat. And they do extremely well. And from personal experience, having used the cheap rods consistently, and effectively, I do not agree that one gets the same sensitivity from any $15 rod. I think varying situations will produce varying opinions on most fishing equipment. I wish you continued success.
And I do use Pro Line line on all of my whipping rods. Mainline. I am pleased with the performance.

How's the sensitivity of the Power pro compared to Fireline? I went to Fireline several years ago because you can feel when a fish swims by your lure when jigging or fishing deep for perch. I also use the 20lb Fireline on my trolling rods for Walleye/pike cause it matches the dive curves for 10lb mono & it's about impossible to break.
