Has anyone checked the lakes around Jackson County. I was on estimates today and may of the medium sized lakes and smaller were completely frozen. I was hoping to try to get on Mellecamp Saturday or Sunday. Any news would be appreciated.

I havent noticed any ice covered lakes here in Jackson. Maybe Cranberry Lake is? Where is mellencamp at? I have heard of that lake but do not know where it is

One of the guys from my work lives on Woodland Lake (bit north of the Jackson area obviously), but him and his kids were walking on the ice behind his house on Sat and he said it was a good 2". Also he said the lake was completely frozen over, these temps keep up I may try and drive out to Sand Lake Sat morning and see what I see.

LFG-
The lakes I saw yesterday that were frozen were: Swains, Mirror, Round Lake (MI center) and a bunch of small ponds.
Mellencamp is across from Little Wolf Lake. Little Wolf Lake is on Wolf Lake Road, south of Michigan Ave., south of Grass Lake. You park at the county park and walk back to the lake to the east. It looks like a tiny lake from the road but is actually quite large with 2 or 3 smaller back waters way in the back. Fishing can be great out there for first ice. Seems to die down a little as the winter progresses. The secret out there is to move a lot until you find the fish. Crappies, red ears, gills, perch and bass. It always seems to be one of the first fishable places as I believe how it is protected from the wind. There is a current out there but it is more concentrated toward the channel leading into Little Wolf.

Ran out and checked Mellencamp during lunch. Shore ice is 3/4", out in front of the dock its 1 1/2". I'm hoping that by Saturday we will have 2 1/2-3" of ice.
