Last night, Greg, a friend from school came out to go hunting. We were best of friends growing up, and both got married, and ya know how that goes. After some talking, I decided I was gonna hunt with my bow, because I needed to close the deal. Well anyway, I took him to a stand that I havent hunted in about 3 weeks, and I had absolutely no idea of how the hunting was gonna be. We got to the woods at about 3:00, and I walked him to the stand, and went to another spot with my climber on my back. At 4:09 I heard him shoot, than seconds later, a voice rang out from deep in the woods "THAT BETTER NOT BE ON MY F'N PROPERTY!" Well I was furious, he came looking for Greg, but couldnt find him. I was about to get down and go say something to him, because he has not one thing to say about crossing property lines. There are 5 stands along the property lines, that are either on my side of the line, or on his side, shooting onto my side, with bait piles the size of Mt. Everst.
WEll Greg missed a buck, which he said was a spike, possibly a 4 point with 8 inch tines. All in all, he seen 4 deer, which was great! The land he usually hunts is only a 6 acre peice of woods, that has never been productive for him, and has only ever seen 2 fawns, so he was fired right up.
Back to me. It was 5:05, and I look out into the beanfield 40 yards away, and see a deer walking the edge. So I grab the binocs to see what it was, and it was a yearling doe. Than another appeared, than another, than another. All together, I had 7 deer coming in, but no horns on any of them. Well, thats fine, I have been wanting to thin a few does out anyway. They came into the woods, and started walking my way. The biggest doe, which I had my sights set on, got onto our fooprints, and could tell something was up, but she didnt know what. Any way, She moved downwind of me at about 35 yards, and stuck her nose up in the air, trying to figure out what was in the woods. And who says Scent Blocker doesnt work!!! Well, she kept pacing back and forth, coming a few yards closer each time, and offering me plenty of shots, but I wanted to get her within 25 yards. After getting within range, I drew my bow, and she stopped. Beautiful broadside shot, but a tree was in the way. I held at full draw forever, than she stepped out from behind that tree, and stopped again. I settled the pin in the crease, and let the arrow fly. Just as the release let go, she started to take a step, but I still get a double lunger, about 4 ribs from the back. She ran about 30 yards, and stopped, but didnt go down. After a few more steps, I lost aight of her in a thicket. A minute or so later, I heard her go down. Well the arrow looked awesome, but the blood trail sucked!! Thank god for a little bit of snow, because her innards had plugged exit hole, and she left very little blood to follow. Well she only went fifty yards, and I was so thankful to find her. After missing 2 deer this season, this was the boost that I needed. The best part is, it was Nov. 24th, 9 days into gun season, and 5 different people told me I was nuts for not taking my gun. They are eating those words now:lol:
