I'm not one much into fly fishing for trout, I'd be tangled in everything out there. So I just use a crawler. The problem with that is some of the places I have gone are also full of chubs that attack my crawler. A guy told me that after you get a chub on that you should cut off a small piece of the tail and put that on nyour hook. He said that the chubs won't bother it and you will get trout. Now being new to trout fishing I wanted to know first off is this true and does it work? Secondly is that legal to do? He's new to trout fishing also and sometimes people tell newbi's tales just to see if they will do it. I rather ask a dumb question here and have someone tell me the real truth (i hope) than go out and make a fool of myself or do something illegal. I know that is is illegal to use some baits you catch in order to catch other larger species in fishing like bass or perhaps nothern. Anyway now that summers approaching I should change my name from born2hunt to born2fish, hehe.

Born, don't think that would be illegal, but I think you'd be better off to stick with the crawlers.

I'd try a panther martin spinner #0 up to #2. Black with a gold blade used to produce a lot of my my trout before I picked up a fly rod.
I have seen guys using "Mud Minnows" on many rivers with great success. Usually if you catch a trout on a minnow it is generally a good size one.
This is how I would rig up a minnow:
Snell a small treble hook or a long shank regular hook using 2-3 foot for a leader then tie a perfection loop to the loose end of the line. take a needle along with you and thread the line through the minnow from by the tail and out through the mouth, then attach the line to a swivel. (THe treble hook should end up by the tail). This way the minnow will act naturally in the water!!
Another bait that is often overlooked in the summer is spawn!!! On a few rivers that I frequent during the summer the locals clean up on it! Your best bet is steelhead spawn with 3-5 eggs or single salmon eggs(2 at most in a spawn bag).
Hey good luck and have fun! Oh and leave one for me :)
