I hunt private land in Saginaw county and we are having a major yote problem. I plan to buy a rifle to use for varmint hunting but am limited due to the shotgun zone. What is the better coyote gun, the 22WMR or the 17HMR? and what type of performance can I expect from each, effective range, ect?
Thanks

22 mag is far superior for yotes. Do a search as this has been talked about ad nauseum....

Read your hunting book again, as I am pretty sure that the shotgun/rifle zones do not apply to predater hunting. But I do like the 22mag., or if you dont want to buy another gun they make some great loads for coyotes for your shotgun.

Ive re-read the rule book and cant figure out if you can use centerfire rifles for daytime coyote hunting in the "shotgun zone". The shotgun zone is talked about in regards to deer hunting it seems but I cant figure out if that means for yotes also. It's all very vague. Does anyone know for sure or do I need to call the DNR tomorrow? Thanks

You can use centerfire rifles during the day. You are restricted only to rimfire and shotgun at night !

Thanks everybody. I went to the DNR office in Bay City this morning and they confirmed everything.

Watch how fast your 'perceived' coyote problem vanishes after they know you are looking for them!
Smart little beggers...get as many as you can on the first go, even if it takes all night and into the morning. Take a trapper wit you or set out leg holds if you got them.

I like a few to be around to shoot at but right now theres so many on the north end of our property that they pushed the deer out. No more deer sign just mangy dogs. We also have a lot of good turkey hunting and some ducks on the property. I dont want those yotes to start in on the birds and the fawns in the spring. I figure a few 140 grainers from my .270 should at least start to take care of things.
