I was wondering if you folks could give me any recommendations on a nice campground within 2 hours of Kalamazoo? I am planning on taking just my oldest (6 yrs old) daughter on a long weekend camping trip and was looking for suggestions.

Thanks

Tri-Ponds campground in Allegan is great for kids, paved bike paths, swimming pond, frog pond, and fishing pond and lots of other kids. Kinda like camping in a Wal-mart parking lot as far as I'm concerned though. The state campgrounds in the Allegan State game area are nice Pine Point has swimming, fishing and some wonderful hiking trails where my father and I spent many hours walking and finding arrowheads. Ely Lake is also a good spot with probably less people.

A really great family campground is Walnut Hills in Durand Mi. Its partway between Lansing and Flint across I-69. Often, when people hear its in Durand they think of the golf and camping resort you can see from I-69 but thats not it. Its right on the Shiawasee river and it has tubing and canoeing. There is a small lake for swimming and fishing, and 2 small springs that are full of small bluegills and a few big bass. The big boys are hard to catch. There are always a ton of kids patroling the banks for frogs and some fish. Keeps the big ones in hiding most of the time. When they do come out though, they make quite a stir. One (or more) enjoys coming up and gulping some dudes lure and whole rig then fighting till it breaks off and then goes around the little lake acting like its crippled while it tries to shake off the hooks. Then it disappears again and in a few weeks someone else tells the same story that happened to him. I've had it done 3 times to me, and I did catch a 16" out of there once. Anyway, they have a web site and I'll post it here.

Hennings Campground - a Newaygo County campground, just outside Newaygo on the Muskegon river.
