Heading over to Algonac State Park this weekend with the family. Just wondering what everyone's favorite meal is to cook when they go camping. I'll be picking up a few steaks and some potato's to cook on the campfire along with the old standard hamburgers and hotdogs. But my favorite is breakfast!!! Ham and cheese omelet with a little onion, bacon, and toast cooked outside on the coleman grill. That's what it's all about!!:D

I agree can't beat the smell of bacon out in the wood's.
I like too cook up some marinaded venison back strap too.
I think one of the most delicouse meals I ever had in the wood's is my Dad's freshly bater fried in butter deer liver. Now you got me hungry:D

I would have to say, the venison stew in a dutch oven cooked most of the day and topped of with some cobbler in another dutch oven!!:D

This is my kind of place. My wife and I have never been the balonga sandwich kind of campers. We eat the same kinds of foods that we would at home, but modified to fit the cooking style needed. Currently we have a new 5th wheel so we aren't exactly camping, just taking our Luxury Suite with us to the woods. So we have cook outside to fake ourselves into thinking we're camping.

We spent lots of years in less comfortable accomodations, so we don't feel like we're cheating. More like we've graduated. :D

Got to have a black angus steak, and always a crowd favorite and relatively cheap meal is chicken ka-bob's.

I live near Algonac state park. I often take my family out in the evening and use the picnic area to cook out. Which camp ground are you staying at. The river front one if you have never been there is packed on the weekends. Got to have a reservation. I plan on being out there in the middle of the week in August. Hope you have a great time.

One of my favorites:

Hillshire or Kegoles stadium kielbasa

I grew up in Algonac and cut my teeth hunting in the Algonac State Park. Camping in the Wagon Wheel is more like real camping than the riverside. Heck the Wagon Wheel even has more skeeters. 8-)

My favorite has always been "Hobo Dinners" cooked right on the campfire. Good burger, a big slice of onion, some chopped up carrots and taters topped with a bunch of mushrooms. Double wrap it in tinfoil and throw it on the coals. 15 mins on one side 10 on the other. Man it don't get no better than that.

Any kind of stew cooked in a dutch oven, whether it's beef, venison, or whatever. They're all soooo gooood!

By the way, we'll be camping this Thursday late afternoon to Sunday at Lakeport State Park, site #134. If any members are passing by that way, please feel free to stop in , say 'Hi," and have a refreshment. This year, my personal camp refreshment will be Beefeater martinis...in honor of the late John Entwistle of The Who. Yum!:D

Hey Mutt,

A similar dish is one of my favorites called mess in the foil. Open a bunch of different cans of vegetables (corn, lima beans, peas, you name it), chunks of meat (marinated roast works great) cheese, fresh onion, fresh potatoes, a little butter and double wrap and seal. Let it sit in the coals and flip occasionally, total cook time about 20 minutes. The mingling of flavors is fantastic.

geez, can i come camping with u guys? willing to tip waitress and do dishes...lol....i seen this post and i'm tryin to weigh the idea...freeze dried or spam!........was leaning toward spam..more versatile..can be fried, boiled ,eaten raw..comes in single person size...empty container serves to hold worms or crawlers for tomorrows fishing..packs in easily...can be sliced to go on hardtack..even serves as bait, 'in a pinch'...several cans tied together can serve as small anchor...empty container catches rainwater...when u run out of pills and fire is difficult starting..........

I prefer sausage over bacon for breakfast, but there's something about a good breakfast and a cup of coffee early in the morning.

We do the hobo dinners too, and the kids love the hobo pie sandwich things that are cooked over the fire. We even make pizza that way.

My favorite has to be stew. We throw it on in the morning with a little water and a gravy mix. During lunch, we throw in whatever veggies we want with a little more water and gravy, and then by dinner, WATCH OUT!!!!!!!

Dang, now I'm hungry.

Grill up some sausage (I prefer Chirizo or hot Italian) Brush some big Portebellas with olive oil. start grilling the 'Bellas just before the sausage is done. cut the sausage into pieces small enough to cover the tops of the mushrooms. I usually split the sausage in half lengthwise too. Put the sausage on top of the mushroom, cover with cheese. let the cheese melt. MMMMMMMMMMMMM

I love about anything cooked over an open fire or coleman stove!!

My (2) favorites are NY strips on the fire with fried potatoes, mushrooms, onions and cheese in the coleman stove. I also love those fresh fish shore lunches!!!

Got to love cooking outside...

Fresh grilled (open fire of course) tenderloin from that "recent" conservation effort, shared with your camp mates with a nice beverage of choice in the cool, crisp November night air.
