How many shots did you hear opening morning? I counted 350 by 9 30 am and stopped counting after that, since a nice buck stepped out. Was strange though because we are hunting over 700 acres and didnt shoot once, between 6 hunters. Hopefully the neighbors are tagged out now. I didnt count that many shots in Atlanta the first year they wanted all the deer shot. Its nice to be seeing different bucks in the area now though;)
Surprisingly, hardly any. I'm in Waterloo.
However, on the 16th it sounded like WWIII :dizzy:

Thought maybe it had something to do with the wind, but we're also in a pretty secluded area.:coolgleam

I heard 7 shots total on Opening Day, and I was hunting public land in Manistee County. Very poor day for weather and deer movement. Hardly anyone hunting.

I hear about the same number of high power rifle shots on the average bowhunt in Newago County:sad:. Not much shooting, not much deer movement and it looks like the insurance industry has accompished it's goal. We managed three bucks out of six hunters in prime private land with two taken second day.....

I heard less than 20 on the 15th and 16th combined, and I hunt state land in Kzoo county. I only heard two on opening morning, I usually hear at least that before legal shooting hours. I don't know if it was a lack of hunters or a lack of movement due to weather. But I do know a lot of deer in the area will probably live another year.:)

I was going to start this exact thread, weird.
Usually opening morning I will hear about 30-40 before noon. This year I stopped counting at 57 and it was 9:30.

Just 1 about 5 minutes after light... Not mine... Border of Grand Traverse County and Benzie county. Mix of deep woods, wetlands, and farmland.

I hunt Lake County. Always hear tons of shots, but not this year:
Opening day I heard only 3 shots between 7 and 7:30 (usually that's when I stop counting). The first shot came at 7:18 - usually it comes at about 6:45! Total for the day was 13 shots. Quietest opener in memory.
I didn't hunt the 16th. Something called work!
Yesterday started slow as well. But things got hot just about 4 pm. I counted 20 shots between 4 and 4:30. This wasn't counting the "multiple shots" I knew must be target practice.

Northern Newaygo...
Overall, very quiet by my neck. On the opener I heard 30 shots by 10am, another 2 shots from 10am to 2pm and about 15 at dark. Nothing compared to the 200-300 shots you'd hear in the early 1990's.
Granted, it was windy, but I could still hear shots from the next sections over.
Hunter numbers/other camp vehicles, etc. also seemed to be lighter than ever.
Saturday was extremely quiet and offered near perfect conditions. When I heard the first shot go off in the distance about 7:50am, I had actually forgot it was "rifle season" and was in a bow season mode mindset while on stand. Only then did it dawn on me how quiet this year has been. Maybe license sales are falling faster than some officials expected or that way more people stayed in the SLP. Dunno.

"350" Shots on opening day,...then stopped counting? Huh?! You were not in a Hunting area, you were in a WAR-ZONE!
If I heard more than 15-20,......I'd be taking cover and re-evaluating my location! Obviously that is "over-hunting" and if you had a typo, I could understand, but, surely you jest at 350?!?!? Or, No?
One would have to have some form of acoustic superiority to be able to pick out 350 shots,......keep count, and know they were limited to 700 acres. Obviously it seems you were suggesting that there were too many hunters there or, 2 per acre? I follow you now! Okay.
I myself heard about 7-9 shots here in Southwest Kalkaska County near M-66 and the Manistee River. None real "close" to me which I'm glad. Makes me think a lot of the Deer I scoped out pre-season may still be in the area.
Good Luck and Be Safe! :D

I only heard 10 shots from first light until 10AM. This was in National Forest land-Crawford County. In the afternoon I only hard two shots. I only saw one deer in three days of hunting, but in was a nice 8pt, which resulted in the two shots. I have him hanging.

I only count shots until noon. It keeps me focused in the morning (in the afternoon, I can't stop the post-noon nap, so I don't count).

Very few in the Hesperia area. Normally I start hearing shot's before I can see the end of my gun barrel. It was after 8:00 am before I heard any this year. I heard more the the Saturday before the opener.

I hunted Allegan SGA and heard more shots opening day of small game season than the last 4 days of deer season. Hardly any hunters and not much shooting going on all weekend.
I didnt even see a hunter in the woods where I was at all weekend. It was like bow season.
I saw 5 does opeing day and they were to far for a shot and the 16th I saw a small 4 point which I passed up. That was it all weekend. Pritty sad hunting around there.
Oh well maybe there will be more bucks that make it to next year.

15th am-about 5 or 6. Closest 3/4 mi
17th eve one spray of 4 shots bang, bang, bang. bang as fast as anyone could work the trigger-must have been and auto. I hear a lot of those on Sat and Sun eves and I have always surmised that that is a hunter who is finished for the season and wants new ammo next season.
Will hear 2 or 3 of those this eve (Sunday).

2nd day, I heard 2 shots in Newaygo County hunting till 12:00 noon and no shots hunting in Muskegon County in the evening. 1 shot heard yesterday morning 30 minutes before daylight. I have not seen a deer since 7:22 a.m. on opening morning. Funnier yet is that I have not yet seen another hunter in the woods yet, and I have hunted some normally heavily hunted public land.
If hunter numbers aren't down, then they are not hunting in my areas. There were a lot more bowhunters out in these areas than gun hunters so far. I wonder if the gasoline "tax" has gotten to more hunters than anticipated.
I am starting to wonder if gun season really opened or if I have simply been dreaming.

The 14th I hunted bow and saw lots of deer. On the 15th, heard 20 shots by 10:00. 3 in the evening. Friday, 4 in the morning, 3 at night. 2 Saturday morning. Don't know where the deer went, but they are out there. Lots of hunters in my area. Conditions in Alpena cty were excellent, no wind, calm conditions. Can't figure this season out. Hopefully Thanksgiving week will be good, hopefully they will start coming out.
I know lots of people in my area practice QDM, that's why I'm thinking so few shots.

Probably between 80 and 100, which is normal for my area in the central lower. Lots of multiple shots which are usually misses. Lots of deer moving though, saw two bucks and around 20 does on all day hunt the 15th.
Very few shots on the 16th though. Saw two more bucks and 7 does.

NW Manistee County (private land) I was hunting on my property about 1/8 mile SE of the house.
First shot: 7:36AM some distance to the east of me
Second shot: About 7:45AM some distance to the NE of my position
Third shot: About 7:50AM across the road to the NW, reasonably close
Fourth shot: 8:01AM......mine!
By 8:30AM the buck was gutted and laying on the lawn at the house.
Over the past ten years the number of shots on Opening Day that I've heard continue to diminish.

Good Luck and Be Safe! :D Jackson Co. and it was 350 shots by 9 30 am. It has quieted down a bunch now, I only hear a few shots a day now. Maybe all the deer are on our property now;)

I was in Isabella County. There were 200 shots fired by 8:11 on the opener. I stopped counting after that. The first shot was at 6:42 AM -- someone was getting a bit of head start on the firearm season.
I think some of the diferences in shot count have to do with the lay of the land. In the relatively flat farm country, you can hear shots a lot further away than you can in the big woods up North.

In Central Clinton County, there must have been a war. I counted 8 shots between 0640 and the LEAGAL time. then after that, once you could see good, it hit the fan. don't think I went over 5 min. with out hearing a shot. sat out till about 1:00pm. lots of hunter, lots of shots.

2 on opening day and 2 more the rest of the week til noon on sunday.
The shots were faint and probably at a good distance away. On opening day the wind was blowing hard from the Northwest which would make it difficult to hear shots fired from my south or east.

In Barry Co. not that many on opening evening. just a few. on saturday morning though, there were quite a few shots going off. I saw a Dandy State land 8 pointer that i caught video.

Mason county AM 4 shots, PM 3>
Quietest opener I ever remember:(
16, w/8 in one volley... Levering area.
MUCH less than on the 14th, or 13th for that matter, and on those bow days I'm just counting the first and last shooting hours. Including 7 shots after 10pm on the 14th. 3rd new spot in as many years and it seems all too familiar, opening day has certainly lost its luster.

Northern Chippewa County about four miles south of Lake Superior and I heard 3 shot opening morning and two in the evening. The wind cut down on the range I could hear I'm sure but not too much shooting in any given year around where we hunt. I hunted down near Tawas once in the mid 80's and heard more shots before shooting light than we usually hear all season! :dizzy:

Alger county by Chatham. Opening morning... appeared to be less hunters but more shots. Opener.....Probably heard 20 shots before 11am. Evening about 10 shots. 2nd day... 10 shots before 11 am. Evening..maybe 5. 3rd morning 3 shots, 3rd evening 4 shots, 4th morning very slow 1 shot. 4th evening slow 2 shots.
Hopefully now the deer will start moving more now. We seen alot of deer up to the 3rd morning. Hardly any since. We need some really cold weather.

On the 15th i heard maybe 20 shots, with only two of them being close. On the 16th there were maybe 5 to 10 shots. Last night (18th) I heard about 100 shots come from some land to the east of me (all from the same people). I hope that they have no tags left. Kinda crazy the way they where shooting.
