View Full Version : Fish freezing techniques
Who does what for freezing their catch? Anyone use the vacume sealer? I'm thinking about going this route. Any preferance to what one?

I have always frozen my catch in ziplock bags filled with water. This is great but, it takes up too much space in the freezer and it takes too long to thaw out.
My new vacuum sealer is great! The only problem I have is with big salmon fillets (13# fish and up). Mine is too small for the job. If you purchase one, make sure it is big enough for what you intend to seal. For bigger fillets, I just cut them in half and it will seal them off fine.

Hey Rico,
Check out the "Freezing Fish" thread in the "Fish Recipes" section.
I use a Tillia (I think that's the maker) Food Saver- the one you see on TV every Saturday and Sunday. Mine came with two sizes of bags, plus a roll of the stuff (you can cut it and seal it too length- maybe the length of your fillet). If I'm freezing a steak or fillet, I don't even add any water to the bag. It sucks the air out clean. I love mine! I take it with me to my clubs fish cleaning station, and seal em on the spot.

If you use a vacuum sealer, you can seal and freeze steaks, chicken breasts or fish in marinade. When you seal the meat, the marinade gets drawn into the meat. Makes for some good eatin's later.

Thanks for the replys. I picked one up at costcos and it seems to be allright. I'll play w/ it for the rest of the summer to see if I'll keep it. The great thing about costcos is you can return it if it your not happy w/ it.
Thanks again,
Ric
That one has been returned. Not strong enough. New one should arrive thursday.

Hopefully the new one will work out better. I've got the Food Saver (as I've said before), and it will vacuum pack coffee, rock hard. I know it's hard to believe that something from the infomercials is actually worth a crap! :D :D
