Fall fishing here is fabulous! It's worth putting down bow or shotgun for at least a few days! We went out today and although the walleye were not coming as fast a furious as they have been all summer on Saginaw Bay, they are much bigger. We ended up with 14 fish in the cooler. 5 were over 7 lbs. and one was 10.3 lbs!

We caught them all on spoons in about 40-45 feet of water. Gonna try crankbaits at different levels tomorrow. Expecting the fishing to be much better tomorrow. Expecting to boat our limit of big ones by noon!

Walleye101 has a big seminar here in town too and their over 50 boats brought in about 350 fish. Most fish are running 6+ pounds. Nothing beats this fall walleye bite!

Things got much tougher on Sunday, fooling us all. We worked extremly hard going 2 for 6 the whole day. We tried everything in the box: spoons and crankbaits. Most fish we marked were at 30 feet and below with an occasional marking between 20 - 25 feet. Everyone else was in the "same boat" - with very few fish being caught.

We could clearly see the thermocline yet at about 25 feet, so the water hasn't turned yet. The cold front also messed the fish up quite a bit. Hope they all did better with the night bite!

There are plenty of hotels around that area, but if you go into the harbor area in Huron, there is a hotel right next to the Marina. You should be able to keep your boat right there, with a ton of space being its out of the season and all. Not sure where the Public launch is at, cause i usally go with a buddy thats a Charter CAp. down there. Good luck, and make sure your boys are ready for some SLOBS......Do a search on Huron, Oh., and it should get you going in the right direction......Sorry for not being more Specific!!!!!

We stayed at the River's Edge in Huron...right next door to the marina. It cost us $50 a night and the rooms are very nice...not a dirty fleabag place.

They have wireless internet, cable TV and free breakfast. The rooms are are quite large. The parking lot is also big enough for boats & trailers. The only down side was that the pool was closed for the season.

The fish this weeked were about 4 miles straight out from the river in about 40 - 45 feet of water. Be ready to catch some HOGS!

One more thing:

By the time you get there (mid-November) the bite will have changed over from spoons to crankbaits. This will be caused by the water temp. becoming consistent top to bottom. We had a clear thermocline layer visible on our sonar at about 25 feet. Most fish were hanging out below that and would not bite.

Once the water temp. stabilizes (which should be very soon), the fish will be stacked at all levels and eating. Using larger crank baits and stick baits that "wobble" instead of "shimmer" will the the hot lures. I wouldn't push them any faster than 1.8 mph. Check where most the fish are and use Mark Romanack's book - "Precision Trolling" (available at www.precisionangling.com) to see how much line to let out to get exactly where the fish are.

Reef Runners & big baits like Huskie Jerks will be your best bet. Listen to the radio to pick up on what everyone else is having success with. Also, don't count out the night bite...the HOGS hit anywhere from 1/2 hour before dark to mcuh later if you are willing to put in the time!

You probably won't get your limit every day like on Saginaw Bay, but they fish you do get are well worth the wait!

Couldn't agree more. Great fishery, especially in late fall. We went last Friday and managed 9 fish, all between 3-8 lbs. All but one came on spoons, but as someone states earlier in this thread, the cranks will come on strong as the water temps fall and stabilize. Hoping to get back another time or two myself.
We also managed to land some huge silver bass, 5 of which were fish Ohio size.

How far offshore is the Huron walleye fishery? I have a 14 footer and am wondering if I can access it.

Jim...Your 14 footer would be ok at night, but during the day the fish usually move farther offshore. Lots of guys night fish the area using inlines and stick baits trolled at 1.0 to 1.5 mph.

Although this past week, they were still catching them on the inside of the dumping grounds.
