Saw my first flying squirrel last night. It glided about 60-70 feet from the woods edge to a tree in a rye planting. VERY cool looking little critters. Kinda looked like a small red squirrel but the coloring is a bit different. I've spend many MANY hours in the woods and never came across one before. How common are they? Wish I had a camera.

I had one in a woodburner at the cottage once. Dog went nuts in the middle of night and stood point at the stove. I grabbed a welder's glove and opened the door. Seen this little critter cowared in the corner. I grabbed it and seen those big eyes and a flat tail. Took it out the back door and it ran like the wind and somewhat took flight at a trunk of a tree.
The next day I went to a DNR Field Office and tried to describe it to a Biologist. She knew right away. According to her they are quite common, but do to their nocturnal nature we rarely see them.

This was also about 9:00pm last night so yes, it was dark. I was out grabbing my trailcam cards for viewing.

Every year we have a family of them that use the tree where I hang my feeders out front. Very enteraining to watch.
As a kid I had one as a pet for 7 years.

They will visit bird feeders sometime after dark. I've seen them on our many times during the winter months

Im sure weve all heard them at night but didnt know. I have quite a few around me, they sound almost like a mix between a red squirrel and a bird. Real high pitched chirp, thought they were maybe bats at first. Should be Once the tree rats really start thier breeding clucks you will hear the flyers at night.

Keep an eye on this forum and there will be alot of info regarding Squirrel hunting. Lots of guys over your way to help you out, but if you find yourself headed to Southwest Michigan and want to get out, just let me know ahead of time and I would be happy to take you out.
Usually just find a chunk of Acorn woods, set up on a ridge line before daylight and sit quietly. Move from place to place sit still and you should run across plenty.
I like a scoped .22, some use a shotgun. I prefer the sit and stalk, some use a dog.
Is a great excuse just to get outdoors.:)

A friend of mine and I were hunting in the UP NW of Manistique. He had stayed in the stand late due to deer being around and too dark for a shot. He was sitting there hoping the deer would move away when two Flying Squirrels came out of nowhere, landed on the back of his tree and commenced to chasing eachother around, up, and down the tree.:yikes: He said all of a sudden there was the sound of tearing bark right behind him and he thought something was about to pull him out of the tree. When I met him at the truck he was still white as a sheet.:lol: And yes I do remind him of the "Man-eaters" every year. :evilsmile FRANK

I found a feeder on state land without a cap on teh corn bin. Upon looking inside I saw flying squirrels in various stages of starvation and some were dead. So I rescued the stinky little creatures too weak to run. I pulled out my water bottle and hand fed 2 of them for a good long while. They drank til they were satisfied and then came back for more. Kinda odd that these wild creatures were not that scared of me after the initial ruckas of getting them out.
My fire pit at my house is in the woods, when we have fires in the summer time you can lean back and watch the flying squirrels glide ver the fire some 40-80 ft up. Same thing at deer camp, fire pit is in an apple orchard, we have a party for the local camps and sit around the fire (doesn't matter if it's snowing) and the flying squirrels will do the same thing over the fire, this time no higher than 30 ft because they're apple trees. I don't know why, but they seem to like to soar over the fire. They are common, but nocturnal and honestly most people don't look up during the night, the tend to look down at the flashlight beam when in the woods.

I think there's some state land just out side of Holly, other than that I'm not sure what's closer to you. Check the DNR website for state parks open to hunting.
