a summit goliath (at bass pro) wed. and yes there is something for big guys. the hunter saftey system, its a vest with the harness built right in it. i also got that about 5 seconds before i put the stand in the cart (129$$ plus tax) . but what the hell isn't your way of life worth it ? or would you like to be like others on this site and take a fall and see if your lucky and come out ok? :help:THIS WAS NOT MEANT TO BE DEROGATORY BUT A LESSON for those who think they are superman.:dizzy:

Another vote for the Hunters Safety System. Easy to use, comfortable.

I'm a big guy, read fat that used to be in shape. I bought a "Hunt 'em High" I believe and it doesn't fit me. I guess my torso is too long because I it fits the chest, but I can't connect the leg straps so it won't do me any good. I'm going to investigate the Hunterssafetysystem.

I have a buddy that got a summit and the harness was too small. He contacted summit and they custom built one for him free of charge. I would give them a call or send an e-mail.

I have a Hunter Safety System Vest. Had it for 4 or 5 years, and really like it. Mine is before the seat belt like buckles for the leg straps. I didn't like the strap that goes around the tree, too loud. I just replaced it with one I got from Gorilla with one of my treestands that has the carabiner buckle. much nicer. Another thing I don't like about it is it doesn't accomodate a lineman's belt for hanging the stands. I am thinking about replacing it with the Loggy Bayou Transformer. Not as hot for early season, and has the linemans belt. My buddy has one and it works very well.

How big is big. I have a l/xl HSS vest. I stopped using it after trying out a Seat of the pants Fastback. Best harness ever. NO tangles, 75% less bulk than the HSS, 75% lighter, quieter, and the integrated lineman feature without having to make an extra 35.00 purchase is a plus, not to mention that you never run out of slack when you're in a stand. The prusic hook up is a winner.

I hate to tell you, but if you ever fall out of a tree using one of the free harnesses, you still be hurting for awhile. Sure, it will save you from the ultimate fall, but they don't distribute the impact very well, especially if you're like me - over 280 lbs. The vests are only slightly better. I would suggest using one of the safety arrest systems that industrial type workers use. They fit all sizes, are rated for much more weight, and will last a lifetime. Also, you can get a safety "shock" cord that is like a bungee cord that will absorb most of the impact in the event of a fall. They are a tad on the expensive side, and they do not come in camo (that I know of) but there is nothing better to serve that purpose.

I have the HSS and almost got to test it last night!!!!!:yikes:

A couple of years ago, I lost the T bolt to hang my API Alumilite hangon, so I located some on ebay, about 12 for $X, well I hung the stand last night with one of the new Tbolts and I was fine from 4pm until 6:30, I shifted my weight and I heard a loud snap and at them same time the stand dropped a couple of inches. Needless to say, I just about crapped my pants. I looked down where the tbolt used to be and it had sheered off. Thank God there is also a buckled strap to hold the stand in place as well.

I switched over this year from the free harness that came with one of my stands to an HSS vest. I've been pretty happy with it so far.

i have a body unit like you speak of. only problem is the double lockout device makes a hell of a lot of noise on the d-ring. so with that said i'am taking the saftey strap off of it and putting it on my vest which is much easier to use in the field. don't get me wrong , i would think about using anything else when i'am working out in the field doing carpentry work. they have saved my life at the fermi plant and marathon many times due to slips in inclement weather. also the cost off those units is high$$$$.
who makes the seat of your pants outfit :confused:never heard of it and i don't think i have ever seen it. would have been nice to compare them before i bought that vest.:coolgleam

The seat of the pants is made by summit. I bought mine from cabelas it is called the seat of the pants fastback. This is the second year that I have used mine and it is very comfortable and easy to use.

No so with the harness supplied by Summit....this is not a cheap harness by any means and rivals anything on the market other than maybe industrial sytems.

I use the Loggy Bayou Transformer and it's great - well built, comfortable, can be used in warm weather or cold. Comes with the prussic knot line for tree attachment and the lineman's belt. Check it out as an option ;)

Yes...it's glad to see I'm not the only one who can look past a good add campaign for a crappy product.

Gotta love the Fastback.

Yes, swamp, the SOP is what I use and it is very similar to the industrial harness that I used when I was working for GM. Very well made and very comfortable to use and easy to put on, like you said. Another great device made by Summit is the Fall Arrester. This is a must for using a hang-on stand which will be in place a while. It uses the same type of rope system that the SOP uses, along with the Prussic hitch which slides up and down the line. I use it on all of my hang-ons, at my age it is getting pretty creepy climbing a stick ladder in the dark with nothing hooked to you in case you slip on a step, which I have done before especially with snow. I always put a cinch strap or ratchet strap around the line and around the tree at the bottom of the tree, above the knot at the end of the line. This keeps the line taut and really helps when you are climbing up because it keeps all the slack out of the line so you can slide the Prussic knot up the line much easier as you climb. This is a fantastic item which I highly recommend to any and all who use a hang-on stand.

Oh I forgot to mention, you can make your own Fall Arrester by simply going to a store that caters to rappeling, or rock-climbing, and get the braided line like the one that Summit uses. The Prussic Hitch can be tied with any type of line, but I have found that a smaller diameter braided line works best.
