It appears that our natural resources are up for grabs. There is a change to the tribal treaties that will allow netting of fish all the way south to the Grand River. This would include Muskegon Lake.
There are public meetings which the DNR has convened to discuss the proposed changes. The tribe has representatives including their attorney and the DNR attends as well. The DNR appears to be supporting the changes to the fishing rights as well as proposed hunting changes.
They are trying to downplay the changes as minor, but the impact will be devastating as anyone knows who has fished around areas being netted.
There is an upcoming meeting in Grand Rapids. It is Tuesday, October 30th from 7-9PM and is being held at the West Walker Sportsman Club. The address is 599 Leonard Street NW, Grand Rapids.
This is policy change in process. Little by little we can lose rights. If you have time, show up and observe and question what the real changes and impacts are.
