Being new to flyfishing I would appreciate any advice on places to fish in the southwest or southcentral area of MI. Is there public access to the Coldwater River and what's the best way to go about fishing there? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jan

Jan, never fished the Coldwater river myself, but I think some others from this site have and hopefully they will chip in with some advice. You could try the Rogue river near Rockford.

I used to go to school over that way but wasn't into fly fishing at the time. I have heard that Dowagic Creek is good for brown trout. Also you might want to try the St. Joe over at Berrien Springs for Salmon and Steelhead although it is bigger water and wading is a bit more difficult. Sorry I can't give a detailed report but you might try a local fly shop near these areas.

You have some of the best Smallmouth Bass flyfishing waters that there are within 30 minutes of Marshall. The Kalamazoo and St. Joe are excellant, the Thornapple over near Nashville and Hastings along with the Battle Creek over by Bellevue all have good numbers of fish.

Jan, check out our fish stocking page. I think the DNR has stocked the coldwater river in past years. You will get some hints on where to go from the report. Welcome to the sport.

Steve:
Big So. Br. PM, White, St. Joe at Berrien and also some lakes around home (for gills on the beds and bass.) Haven't had as much time to devote to it as I'd like ... yet..but the summers still young! .... Mary

I would definitely try the Rogue, although I hear they've changed the regulations there. Did you ever have any luck on the Big South Br.? .....I never did.

Steve: Would like to say I'll be able to get to the Rogue soon, but I know it won't happen. Maybe sometime later on this summer I can give it a try....Usually when I'm up that way I'm en route to destinations further north.....but ... WHO KNOWS..
On the Big So. Br. PM .... No I never had any GOOD luck with flies, but then I've only been there a few times. My husband did get a nicer Brown (just over 4 pounds) a while back.... on a WIGGLER.
Thanks for the tip....... Mary
