Took my eleven year old son out for his first outing of the season. He's been busy with school and football 'til now.

We set out to get him a squirrel. Our first set-up..he whispers that a buck is going past. I look over my shoulder - sure enough. I decide to move, so I can scout the area the buck passed and change our luck. As we begin to sit, I spot a doe slipping by where we had just come from.

We had sat for maybe ten minutes when I heard a PUTT!!. I looked over my shoulder and several turkeys had just crested the ridge. We were in blaze orange and they were getting ready to split. I pulled up, swung as they were turning...picked the one that's head was high and squeezed...she went down. Boy was my son surprised when it was turkey and not a squirrel!! I was more surprised when I rolled her over to find a 7.5" beard! We high fived!! Yes, I held a a private land GB tag.

I decided to sacrifice my bow blind area so he could get a squirrel. I'd been seeing several fox squirrel. On the way down the ridge towards my spot, I hear him say " dad, there it is"..I kneeled down and he shot the squirrel from the tree. We headed in early to clean our catch. He told me this was a great day that he wouldn't forget. I said that when I was dead and gone, these were the memories that would last the longest. With a bit of sadness in his eyes, he said " I hope that's a long time from now!" Don't have to write what / how that made me feel:).

Congratulations on the "mixed bag"! More importantly, your son's first squirrel. I made the mistake of telling mine last year that I would get his first squirrel mounted. That was an expensive lesson let me tell you! Again, Congratulations to you and your son!
