Well, my last couple of weekend I've been pretty busy:mad: So I figured I would head out squirrel hunting last night after work. I got out in the woods and no time at all there were squirrels running everywhere:lol: It was perfect... the fall smell...warm temps... and the fact that I was in the woods.
It seemed like all the squirrel I saw last night were very young/small? Thes fox/grey squirrels were about the same size as a red squirrel. Any ideas why...
Anyhow I watched one squirrel run through the woods and it started coming towards me...I thought OK this one is going DOWN...I continued watching and low and behold that little bugger came right up to me...about 8 inches away. I was going to shoot it, but I didn't want to shoot my foot. ha...ha... never-the-less I had a great time in the woods. :D

Glad to hear you had a good time. I did some early squirrel hunting while poking around for bowhunting spots. it was simply too thick in the woods then, but i've noticed that things in the squirrel department are looking better now. my favorite is when the leaves are all down and there's a inch or two of snow...plus that has given them time to fatten up! ive noticed lots of little ones too.

One of my deer stands has a big squirrel running around it. Thing must weigh 5lbs. Anyways the last two times Ive sat in this stand it runs up a tree that leans out in front of me. It stops almost eye level to me, looks at me for a minute and then proceeds it foraging.

I think because of the lack of acorns last fall there was a big winter kill, and a lot of the squirrels we are seeing now are the young of those that survived last winter. Next year should be much better.

Tbal,
Look at it like this, you got unemployment, use it, you paid for it, and best off all, you can hunt when the rest of us are working.
OK, call me an optimist, but I've always wanted a four week lay off the end of October.
In all reality, god luck with everything
