i was at reedsburg dam today and i couldn't believe how low the water levels were for both the muskegon river and the dead stream flooding. does anyone know why the water levels are so low?

I think its has something to do with the rain or lack of. Not sure though. :smile-mad
They have been low for a while now in Newaygo/Muskegon county.

i was there over labor day and it was just as bad then as now. there is only a trickle of water pouring over the reedsburg dam... i was sad to see it like that...:(

I think there have been adjustments to the level of Houghton Lake, that's why reedsburg is lower than it used to be.

No rain (we were border line drought this summer!) = lower levels in many lakes and rivers across the state. You should see how low the Grand is here in Grand Rapids.

Very little rain and the biggest problem - evaporation on Houghton Lake plus the boards were pulled out of the first dam lowering the lake level too early. That combined with lake of water and the evaporation has put Houghton Lake so low that it can't contribute any water to the Dead Stream and Reedsburg systems.
Better management is needed to say the least!

Too many GREEDY companies bottling water & hoarding it in warehouses , so it is unable to evaporate and precipitate like it used to in the "natural" scheme of mother nature!!

when do you think the water depth will get back to where it should be?

There has been and will be more rain this week. My friend called me from my dock on Sunday to tell be that the rocks at the bottom of my seawall were dry on top which is very rare.
If we get ice early this year preceeded by a lot of rain and the ice lasts a long time with great snow falls we will be okay. If the DNR takes command of the water level we will be okay. But the Great Lakes are low and depend on their watershed i.e. Houghton and others for their water - the governing bodies will give the big lakes first dibs on the water for commerce to recreation.
Pray and hope for a cold wet winter!
