I have zero experience with pinning, except for what I see on the river...... and I like what I see and am itching to give it a go
What do you more experienced folks think the best bang for my buck would be in a beginner set up.
I have my eyes set on the raven matrix rod and reel for the moment.....but Ive spent a lot of good money for bad in my life and I'm hoping to avoid that with this purchase...
Thanks in advance...

what was advised to me was always get the best you can afford..dont scrimp and cut corners..if you dont like it you can sell it and get your money back..seen it too many times and they were right..check out the SST site and take a peek in the classified folder and pick up eather of the two rods there and get a matrix reel ( if you go cheep) .. can always sell them if its not for you..just my $0.02..

you cant go wrong with raven reels. i own two( the eclipse and the sst3) and both are good reels . all my friends throw ravens and i havent heard one complaint from any of them. Raven rods i dont know much about though . what ever you get, just know once you land your first fish, you will be hooked good luck

Would one expect problems with a reel like this? If so what problems?

First pick if you can afford it would be the Islander. Second would be the Raven Vectra SST, and pls dont spool your CP with nothing less then 8Lb. For your first rod, go with the Raven IM6. You'll appreciate the action when you have to turn a fish heading for the woods. I would go with nothing less then a 13'er. I fish small creek and big river systems with my 15'er....just watch out for trees.
good luck and tight lines.

Dan,
The Okuma Aventa is a perfectly good reel but for the money I would suggest the Raven Matrix, Okuma Sheffield, or Raven Classic which are all under $200. There are plenty of Aventas floating around the internet for less than $100 if you just want to consider a used reel. I would not suggest the bushing model (silver) but only the bearing model (bronze/brown).
For a rod its hard to go wrong with the Raven Matrix 3pc 12'9" IM6, rated 4lb-10lb. Its a beefy stick capable of tossing larger floats in big water and handling bigger fish. Components are nice for a rod at this price point. Retail is in the neighborhood of $110. For those on a serious budget look at the Shimano Convergence 12'6" 2pc for around $60 or $70.

Ron....
I've sent you a few PM's and now I know why you aren't getting them...
you need to clear out some old messages....your box is full.
I told Shawn to give you my number so we can discuss the reels you have.
take care...

depending on what part of the sate your from, i would be more than happy to show you (or anyone) on how to use and set up a cp. Center pinners are becoming more and more common nowadays on the river and we all must stick together and help eachother out.

Thanks for the info. I had a look at the Aventa yesterday and it seemed to be good enough to get started. Being as I am pretty well equipped for big lake and river fishing for the most part I don't see a need to break the bank on one set up. I don't want junk but $600 seems a little extreme for just one rod & reel. Not saying it's not worth it but this will be just one of many applications I'll be using so considering that I'll give the Raven a look and make my decision.
