Ive been slowly checking off my species caught on a flyrod list this summer. One of the fish that I cant seem to get at is carp. I know there hard to catch on a fly. My problem is I cant find suitable carp water. I need a lake or pond that has a clear shoreline to cast from. Ive tried to catch them out of my yak but I just cant seem to sneek up on them. So anybody know a good carp lake or pond.

Grand River is chock full of them. Almost any lake seems to have them anymore. I do best on inland carp quietly wading silty back bays looking for signs of feeding fish. Often times all you will see is emergent weeds moving on an otherwise quiet shoreline, or just the slightest disturbance in the water. Anything that looks buggy will probably get bitten when you find fish, and the stalking is half the fun. I keep the flash on the flies to a minimum, maybe a strand or two of black crystal flash as a tail on some plain hackle fly. I usually will tie them clouser style with painted red or black eyes so I don't catch as many weeds, and the hook will ride up when deploying a bottom bouncing technique that seems to call them in.

Hit Fremont Lake in the am right from the breakwall.
I have been seeing many monsters jumping early in the am.
I didnt really know that carp would actually jump like that.
Hoepefully one of these mornings I will hit decide to hit it with some corn or doughballs subsurface and show you what I mean.
Right now that is from about 7-8am.

If you go to my site www.michigancarp.com (http://www.michigancarp.com) and look under fishing locations.
You will see Saline lake and river, The river would be your best bet, you may also want to look at Belleville lake near Sandys Marina, you should beable to site fish them from the shore, and heres a friend of mines website all about Carp on the fly http://carponthefly.blogspot.com/

Hope this helps you out.

By the way Im looking for lakes or rivers in the SW Mi area. Ive read the carp on the fly bible called " Carp on the fly". Great book and full tons on info. Ive been tying carp flys all year. But like I said my main problem is finding that lake, river, or pond that has them where I can get at them. Ive tried river fishing for them but I cant get close enough without spooking them. Where I bowfish for them there is no way to get a fly to them. Its a lillypads with very small openings. If I were to hook one I would never get it out of there, its hard enough to pull them out with the 100lb braid on my bowfishin reel. If anyone is interested in doing some carp on fly fishing shoot me a pm.
