I hunted in a ground blind last year 90% of the time and will do the same this year. The biggest thing I noticed was the difference shooting setting in the chair. Pratice Pratice Pratice shooting from the chair and if you are shooting through netting, pratice that also.

Good Luck

Play the wind and limit your movement. Deer are more likely to pick your movement out on the ground as opposed to a tree stand. Try to have some type of cover around you if you are not using a pop-up blind. Make sure you clear the ground where you are hunting from so not to make noise if you have to adjust your feet. Try to place yourself behind a big tree where you think the deer will be coming from (and they will always come from the other direction:D) and use it to cover up your movement when a shot is approaching. Try not to set up too close to a trail you are hunting as it will be easier for a deer to pick out something different in their daily travel route. Oh, and try not to fight off all the blood sucking bugs attacking you as it will be a sure give away of your location:lol:

If you hunt from a pop-up make sure you put it out early enough and brush it in if you can to blend in with the surroundings! Or you can build a ground blind out of brush, i do it all the time! Heres a pic from last yr of my pop-up brushed in.

Im looking to travel light, no blind. Just a man and his bow, and his compass. Thats all I need, maybe a flashlight, and TP.
Some water to drink too. Thats all.

light is good but you should get a stool of some type.its hard to get onto your knees to shoot if your just sitting on the ground.sit in the tops of deadfall trees, they give good cover.cover your face and hands.

I agree with you about putting it up early. That's good advice. I got blown by a bick racked 8 pt last fall because I thought I could throw a blind up near where I saw him twice earlier in the season. He walked up within less than 10 yards from me, but had a pile of brush between him and I. He froze there for about 15 minutes checking out what was new there. I couldn't move or anything. He slowly backed up, went 40 yards downwind and that turned around back where he came from.....No shot. That was a smart deer and I made a poor decision. I now have a stand in that location where he frequents. I haven't hunted it yet though. I know he moves through there in the early afternoon. I plan on hunting it Sunday. If I would have put that blind up well in advance I would have killed that deer.

I'm with you this year, I'm tired of dealing with tree stands on state land, so I elected to do the majority of my hunting from the ground. I had my wife sew me up a 18" x 48" x 3" pad that I carry on my back and use when I sit up against a tree. My bow is short enough that it allows me to shoot while I'm sitting on the ground (lots of practice, it's quite a bit different). Other than that it's pretty much what the other guys said, stay back from the trails, pay special attention to the wind, and find as much cover as possible.

Thanks for the replys.
I like the idea of deadfallen trees as cover.
I think I know just where to go, I remember seeing one.
Just wonder how crowded the state land will be this weekend.

Don't forget the knife and rope to drag your deer...oh and a tag too!;)

If you want to get fancy, carry a small set of snips for branches and some thin wire....easy to fasten together a nice hide quickly and quitely!

Since you dont plan on using a blind, using deadfall and natural ground cover is perfect. A couple tips...first, make sure you leave yourself clear shooting "windows". Its a good idea to surround yourself with brush or whatever cover youre using so you can allow for wind changes. Clear the ground inside of any twigs, leaves and anything else that might crunch or make noise if you move. Lastly, I like to dig a little into the ground to help mask my scent. The ground, with everything in it thats breaking down, gives off a strong "autumn" smell.
