Been hitting the Crocker boat launch hard these days for the great perch action out on St. Clair. I was aware that the local bait shop almost across the street is about as cheap as they come when it comes to giving you a fair count. I have to ask for a few more just to come up with what I feel is fair. I never looks like there are 3 dozen in there but I never sat and counted.
Yesterday I went to the 16 mile shop (metro beach) and about crapped my drawers when I saw just how many nice big healthy minnows I received, so it's tome to share where you get em and why.

It all depends on who's doing the scooping. I've had some very bad counts from there as well but I bet I know who scooped yours and I have his work schedule! :p ;)

Is he working tommorow :D

I had been getting mine from the party shop at jefferson and shook....Been going there for a couple of years now and had great counts (especially when you can dip them yourself) till a couple of weeks ago...

The guy working (I've never seen him there before) gives me about 20 minnows and tries to tell me "that's 3 dozen"

I told him KMA....put em back in the tank. He then wants to argue with me about it, (burning my fishing time) I was so PO'd after 5 min of that BS that I had to walk out before I hooked em.

Too bad.....I liked that shop and talked them up all the time....Not anymore.

Spent a few cold dark mornings waiting for someone to show up at that place (Kiddycorner from crocker launch) before driving all the way to selfridge for bait then all the way back to crocker. I know its really not that far away but tell that to my fist and my dashboard. Im done there also.

Selfridge gives good counts, it's worth the drive!

I know this will strike a nerve with some, but I will never get bait at Lakeside again. If I'm fishing out of 10mile I will drive to 16 and Jefferson first.

I had a problem with lakeside a couple of years ago...been in there a couple of times this fall and the counts were good. Same thing with pro fishing by the crocker launch...We ran low the other day on the lake and ran accross to get another 2 dozen...probably ended up with 60.

I guess it's kind of crap shoot anyways... I still think SANG and Bluewater are the most consistant.

Anybody bought bait from the new shop on jefferson N of metro? Need to check it out one of these days.

Like I've said before if you know of a bait shop that gives good counts, keep it to yourself or you will find that advertising it to the whole world will find your favorite place low on minnows so that when u arrive he has no choice but to give you less.
You would think a bait shop would want to draw customers in by giving good counts if anything! They would find more guys buying other stuff there as well. I understand that everything else went up in prices too so they can't use that as an excuse. These days thats just the cost of doing buisness. I just wish that some of these places realize that their customers are guys that are used to getting decent counts. It's the guys like us that indirectly will affect a bait shop's buisness in the future by bringing up youngsters in this great pastime.
We dont want to be teaching future fisherman and fisherwomen which bait shop "rips you off" we have all we can do to keep them interested in this sport. I hope some of those who read this take it to heart and change their ways.

Always get good counts and price at Blue Water in Fair Haven. Did get a good count this past saturday at Selfridge, although Brian was a bit cranky:lol:

If I'm getting 6 to 8 DZ a normal perch day for 2 people. I'll spend an extra 8 bucks and get a 1/2 gallon. You'll get a much better count by the gallon or 1/2 gallon.

Are they getting any emeralds these days? I used to go there all the time but in recent years they haven't had emeralds, only sand shiners. :(

John, typically Paul M. dips his own minnies. What ever is in the river is what you get. And that channel is full of shinners this time of year. Ive know those guys for over 30 years, and they do things their own way. They do not want to deal with the antics some of these bait suppliers play with them, he would rather not have them ( like back in August), then to deal with suppliers......

Imly City Fish Farm sells them by the pound. Flat heads and Emeralds. Flat heads are about $5 a lb. and Emeralds are about $6 a lb. They put them in a plastic bag and shoot the water with oxygen so they last. They will last up to 5 hrs. if kept cool . I've done this twice this year goin up to Caseville with only a few dying. It's about 1 1/2hrs drive. He doesn't have Perch sized Emeralds all the time. About 4" they become walleye minnows. You get about 10-- 12 doz. per lb. Depends on the size .

Metro Party shop has always given me a good count and good quality minnows. At pro fishing and archery...well...lets just say I would only buy minnows there if it was an absolute necessity

I agree the pro bait shop by the crocker launch gives a crap count, not to mention the fact that a quarter of them are literally the size of guppies. Metro party shop is worth the drive.

I believe it is Bayside Supplies, approx 1 block south of South River Road on the east side of Jefferson. The first couple times I went there in the morning, I was very happy with the count. I went in one afternoon and a different guy was there and I was disappointed. Based on my first experiences, it's probably worth another try.

Its a long drive but Mackies at the end of Anchor Bay drive has emeralds and gives out good counts. Of course very convenient if launching at the nearby DNR .
