View Full Version : Help with mechanical broadheads
I got some HyperShock mechanicals.. Come with the heat shrink tube to "keep them closed" when practicing with them.
My question is:
Is there something other then the heat shrink tubes that can be used that will last through more then 3 shots and keep them closed??
I had 3 good shots at first and had to replace the heat shrink tubing.. After that, they only lasted 1 shot each and i had to remove the arrowhead through the back then pull the arrow out.
I am using a compressed layer styrofoam target and it is slicing it up..
Granted I give them props on a well made mechanical broadhead with a 1.99" opening length and I CANT keep them closed which is a GREAT thing if you ask me.. However for practice I would like to keep everything the exact way that it will be for when I shoot, so I dont want to remove the blades for practicing.
Any suggestions?

If you remove the blades it will change the head weight. just use one for practice, and keep the new ones for hunting. And get a broad head target..

The weight differance in nill to nadda on there heads i have show this to many before and it makes no differance inflight or zero.

Now that I think about it, you are most likely right.. The shrink tube ADDS weight, while the removal of the blades probably take off less then what the shrink tube adds.. I will weigh the two with a scale and see if there is much of a difference between the head with the blades, the head with the blades & shrink tube, and the head without the blades.. Now the thing is getting my old gram scale out of storage from years ago.. I knew I kept it for a reason.. HA
the blades weigh in at 1.95 grams EACH.. making a huge difference on the head weight.. o well, looks like my stryofoam target will get shredded.. its not too hard to just unscrew the head with it poked through the back.. just wanted to check in and mention how much the blades weigh..

That I will sell you real cheap... This is quite possibly one of the worst performing broadheads I have ever shot.. If you want my advice sell them and get something else... On 3 deer, never had this broadhead pass through.. The one i didnt even hit a rib going in and still did not get a pass through.. Heck if you paying the shipping I might just give them to you..

What head are you using cain the 100 125 or 80s
because I havent noticed a differance out to 40 yds in my groups or drop with 80s.
as for Dan;s issue which head were you shooting. 125's or 100s.
I dont get it i have seen the 80s shot out of 45- 50 pound bows get pass through on deer at 20 yds . with 27 inch long cx 100s/

28" arrows.. There new Maniac looks interesting but by the time you buy the additional 25 grains they are up around $50 and there are a whole lot of other broadheads on the market that perform just as well for alot less..
Just dont have an ounce of faith in them!
Would never even consider shooting them ever again..

as stated before the 125s are to large........ and eat up a lot of energy.
I used the 100's and 80s. without issue the 125 is to much head for most bows....
the 80s have performed like a champ as well as 100s.
I used to shoot 125s..... until i realized i didnt have too........
but hey i also shoot slick tricks,. magnus.
and my sponser head Muzzy which i woul dnever leave but having killed dder bear and gobblers with that 80 grain hybershock i love it it kills clean and quick.
The one's I got are the 100 grain.. I have, however thought of a way to keep them closed for praticing.. It will cost me the blades on the 1 arrow that I will use to practice with, but I could easily wrap a wire tie around the head where they want the shrink tube to go.. It will damage the blade, but I can use that one for practice only..

my question is why doesnt this mechanical shoot exactly like your field tips? Thats the whole point of having mechanicals...
even so, why doesnt this company make a practice head like I get with my Rage heads?

Cainm use a small piece of tape. if your that worried about the blades and weight differance,
ask the guys at the company about it i have shot the head with no blades and blades impact point is no different.
we are shooting deer....... not 2 inch spots at 50 yds.....
try it with and without the blades on the same head and get back to us

i like to practice my marksmanship.. nothing wrong with that.. however, even the wire tie didnt work out how i was hoping.. it came off in just as much time as the shrink tube... i have been practicing with no blades.. was just hoping someone might have a solution or an idea on the problem..

LOL ......no really.
Lot arent alot are.
the 80's in my book are awesome ....
the new fixed blade is a missle.
I shot the 100's liked them but the 80 was more logical to me. with lots of dead stuff.

If you grind off the tab of the blade that sticks out (the part that opens the blades) . It should not loose much weight and will not open when it hits your target. Don't think you would need the shrink tubing that way but a little bit of it would bring the weight back up to where you would want it. You will than have a practice setup and would need to get some new blades if you wanted to use it for hunting.
