View Full Version : Bow fishing question
I have owned my bow for somewhere around 12 years now. I looked around yesterday for a place close to me (48381) to practice at where my neighbors wouldnt have to see me in the back yard.. However, the best I could find was
Lyon Oaks County Park - You can NOT practice - but you can hunt
Island Lake Rec Area - You can NOT practice - but you can hunt
Kensington MetroPark - Only bows are allowed for bow fishing
The bow fishing sounded like GREAT practice - moving targets and you shoot down into the water such as you would from a tree stand..
My question is - How can I rig my existing Golden Eagle bow with arrows that have strings to pull the fish in (in the event I do actually hit one)?
Are there special bows just for fishing, or special arrows that will go with any bow?
Or is there a way to modify a target arrow to work this way?
Help is appreciated!
Thanks

don't use your hunting bow.go to the pawn shop & find a bow to fit ya that you won't mind getting all dirty & slimmie.solid fiberglass fish arrows with muzzy's & an AMS retriever reel .oh,and cheap roller rest.should be able to find this whole set-up at gander mt.
Wouldnt it be better to try to be clean with it and get the practice with the bow that I will use for hunting?

cain he was just giving you a wise suggestion.... i have a blackwidow that i hunt with that i also carp shoot with because im crazy... its like 1000 dollar bow... i would be devestated if i lost it or broke it on a carp... but i still do it... could be asking for trouble using your good bow but i do it too so i have no room to talk... its really up to you..... not sure if carp season is still open in the smaller rivers? might want to check the guide... the best time to hunt them is in like may-july

I use a bow for carpin that I got when I was eight I think, Its draw length, weight everything is maxed out and it still doesnt fit me but I can pull it back fast. Ive seen guys drill a hole in a soup can and put a bolt through it, then put it in there stabilizer hole on there bow. Then wrap cord around the can. When you shoot it will release the string just like a reel. As far as arrows go Ive seen fishing arrows at meijers or walmart before. If they have them there usually in the carboard arrow holders. If your just doing this to practice shooting I wouldnt go out and buy an expensive reel and all that. It is also very challenging. I shoot carp out of my kayak. I stand up in it and use my paddle as a push pole. I will tell you, AIM LOW, snells law of refraction without getting into it to much basically states that because the fish is under water that its not where you see it. So a rule of thump is to aim six inches below the belly of the fish. That should in most situations get in the right area. Here's a couple of pics from my last outing.

P.S. I wouldnt say that carp fishing is the best practice for deer hunting, if I were you I would go find a pro shop near you. Usually for a small fee if any they will let you practice at there range.
I have opted to practice in the back yard - When neighbors are not home..
Not that they think badly about hunters, its just a few less variables to deal with such as pets being let out.. Perhaps next year I will think about getting setup with a decent fishing bow.. For now, the backyard will have to do..
As far as my bow.. its nothing immaculant.. a Golden Eagle Predator.. Paid $300 12 years ago for it new and havent changed much on it besides the sights, and recently new silencers, peep tube (dont want to pull back and have that snap if I come across a 12 point or something) and got some new carbon arrows to go with it.. Nothing like the thousand dollar bows that some people use but I figure the indians did it with ALOT less - sometimes just a spear! If they ate good, so can I with what I have.. Heck, I still have the original string on it! Even the guy at GM didnt believe me when I told him the sting was 12 years old.. Guess the wax and storing was a good thing! OK - I am rambling now and need to get up early to scope out a few prospective spots..
btw.. nice carp Undertow!

Who cares if you piss off the neighbors, one year I was out and the neighbor lady came out and started giving me ****. I was shooting in the opposite direction of her house. Matter of fact it was across the street behind me. She told me she was gonna call the cops, I told her there was no need to call them, a county cop lives right nextdoor to me. Well I was shooting with the cop that day and he's also my cousin. She told me I was imbred or something. I preceeded to tell her to get off my property. Needless to say she doesnt stop by to borrow sugar.
