View Full Version : Can arrows be too stiff?

I shoot a 2001(?) Darton Mavrick with a trophy taker shakey hunter drop away rest. I bought Slick Tricks and decided to see where they shoot compared to my field points. When I shot my BH it went about 4" left of POI of my FP. I paper tuned my bow at Al n Bobs a couple months ago but the kid who was helping with the adjustments moved my rest so far out that my arrows were on a big angle and I did not think it was right but when I shot through paper at about 5 yards it shot bullet holes and he said that bullet holes don't lie...so I went home. Well, since the rest was so far over I could not get my bow sighted in because my sights would not go far enough over to compansate for the rest so I went back to Al n Bobs and asked them to help me out again because I didn't think it was right. This time it was a different guy who helped with the paper tuning. He squared up my rest and said that it was definately not right. He then had me shoot at 5 yards and it did not look good but he said don't worry about it lets shoot at 15 yards I bet it will shoot bullets...and it did. He then went on to say that some times it just needs to have time to straighten out.

Well I was shooting pretty good but every once in a while I would notice my arrow would have a little flicker to it. I don't know what is causing that, I wasn't sure if it was the Blazers that I switched to this year or what. When I shot my slick trick it would go 4" left so I got to thinking...if my bow is "supposedly" tuned, (which after reading some posts I highly doubt) could the reason that my flight is not true be that my arrow is too stiff. I only shoot 66 pounds and my bow is no flame thrower so I would say I am shooting less than 300FPS so I don't think that my arrow is to weak. I shoot Gold Tips (not sure of the exact model but they are the same as what my buddy shoots of out his mathews) I guess I am looking for suggestions of what to do...for some reason I have never had a bow shoot broad heads just like my field points and this year is going to be the year that changes. Any help would be appreciated. I plan to print off Doc's tuning post along with Steves paper tuning post and try that tonight. If you guys have any other suggestions please let me know, I thought about going with expandables but with as much shooting as I have been doing lately i owe it to myself to get my bow tuned right. If you need any more information in order to help me please let me know

Thanks!

Each arrow is rated for a certin pound bow, like 40-50 and 50-60 gold tips number on there arrows for 50-60 is 5575....... I think? sounds like your arrows are not fletched(sp) correctly you want the blade on your BH to match your arrow flecting and spin test it to make sure is straight.

1) Check and see what arrows you are shooting.
2) Also, whats your draw length and arrow length?
3) Could also be your release and form too.

Also try walk back tuning to fine tune things. It can be a challenge sometimes to get it dialed in but its worth it. I start with paper tuning and get bullet holes then walk back tune to get it dialed in. After that my broadheads group right with field tipps out to 50-60 yards.

Did the pro shop guys watch you shoot to make sure your form and draw length are correct?

Also check for vane clearence issues.

The pro shop guys did watch me shoot so I would have thought they would have said something if my form or draw length were off. I guess you never know but i shoot with a lot of people and they have never said anything to me about my form or draw length. Im going to try to paper tune it again tonight.

Sounds like your centershot is way off . Use broadhead group tuning to fine tune your centershot . (see Doc's thread)
I have gotten false reading through paper many times , and have since switched to walkback and broadhead group tuning .

If your BH's are flying left , you would want to move your rest to the right in 1/16" increments .

The first step in tuning your bow is selecting the correct arrow. The spine or stiffness of the arrow depends on arrow length, peak weight, type of cam, axel to axel of bow, release, string type, and broadhead (target tip) weight. Here is a great link for you to see check your arrow selection. In item 6a check "calculated" for draw weight so it will automatically be adjusted for your personal set up.

When paper tuning you should get bullet holes from point blank, 5 yards, 10 yards, and 20 yards. If your rest seemed way off when originally tuned be sure you have good clearance.

Broadhead tune it buddy. Forget that paper, paper lies everytime I don't care what that "tech" at Al and Bobs says.

I'm getting a half inch nock left tear but my broadheads and field points have the same POI with the rest at exact centershot out to 50 yards.

Couldn't agree more Doc. Papertuning is worth about as much as the paper being used. You can accomplish MUCH more by flight tuning and then broadhead flight tuning.

I will broad head tune it tonight and will let you the outcome tomorrow.
