If anyone knows the low life POS that did this, let me know....I'll turn them over when I am done with them and you can have the reward.....

STRONACH TWP. — A $400 reward is being offered for information leading police to the thieves who stole approximately 2,000 pounds of aluminum used for the operation of the Little Manistee River egg-take weir.

About 35 aluminum “boards” came up missing earlier this month. The pieces are used to create the fish holding ponds at the weir.

The egg-take weir on the Little Manistee is used to collect hatchery stock for the DNR’s salmon and steelhead programs. The fish run the river to spawn, but their upstream migration is blocked by the facility.

Once the DNR turns pumps on to push water through the weir, the fish can run into the facility, where they are kept in holding ponds until they are ready to spawn. The concrete holding ponds require the aluminum boards to block up the water. The boards are also used to regulate the flow of water through the other holding ponds as well.

According to the Michigan State Police, the theft had the potential to affect the Great Lakes sport fishery. A fisheries biologist with the DNR said the agency is working with a Manistee business to make replacements, which could cost around $2,000. The operation of the weir is not expected to be affected.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Silent Observer program at the Michigan State Police post, 723-3535 or Manistee County Central Dispatch at 732-6241.

Those darn Scrap thief's, hope they don't screw up our fishery. they are stealing everything even metal bolted and chained down. I have been ripped off big time. I even had some scrappers steel all my 48" large post concrete forms, & aluminum 15 yard dump truck box tail gate, and scrap them. never got the forms back but luckily got the box gate after paying almost $1000.00

I hope they catch these guys and you get to have your personal time with them. Make sure you treat them real Well.

They should be checking scrap yards for these things. They gotta take them some where not too far away that is cost effective.

There is no mention of it in the Ludington paper but I heard that in the Manistee paper they said that the gates had been replaced to the tune of $7,000.00... There will be no disruption in egg taking so that is a good thing....

I would'nt expect any cooperation from the scrap yards. The yard at 8 Mile and I-75 was forced to post a sign saying " We no longer can accept man-hole covers".
When I lived in NY, someone stole over 3000 square feet of aluminum roofing right off a train station in Brooklyn.

They'll cooperate.

All it takes is a badge to show up and say, "cooperate or I call the EPA on all those refridgerators"

The whole scrapping situation is really sad. The worst thing about it is that somebody will steal something that is worth a ton of money, i.e. aluminum rims, just to scrap it for a fraction of the acutal value.

It is always interesting to take scrap in to the yard in the hood of saginaw early on a saturday morning and see all of the brand new aluminum rims that were aquired the night before and taken in for scrap.

As Maak said, the yards don't care. They don't ask questions and they look the other way. We had several aluminum injection molds stolen from us a few years ago. Valued at $80,000, with a scrap value of $5,000. We got an inside tip of where they went. But, the yard acted fast, by the time the police got there, there were no molds or recipts . For the yards to reject suspect metal, it would hurt their business. Dishonest but true.

Hey Rich, How's it going? I sold a bunch of scrap metal when I was cleaning out my old house to move. Better to have someone buy it than to pay saomeone else to haul it off and bury it. The scrap yard is required by law to check photo ids and confirm information I was required to fill out on a form. They said it was state law. I was very surprized. I'm sure that a dishonest person could probably conect with a dishonest scrap yard but the one I went to north of town was pretty tight as to who was selling what.

Very true. My company actually pays an outside vendor to do all of our recycling for us, no exceptions. But copper thieves hit us, and hit us hard, repeatedly. They take the copper cables to the scrap yard where the operators know it is entirely illegal for them to take old telephone cables. The operators in my opinion are just as bad as the people doing the actual stealing if they are taking ill-gotten gains.

Hey Keith, how's it going down south? My brother tore down his old barn, and we took the metal to a yard outside of Richmond, junk metal from a barn, but they still asked for I.D., that's good. All it takes is to have a friend that works at a yard.
