40mpg is great, but safely storing 5 foot rod section, or in the case of my ultralights, 6 foot one piece rods...it comes up sorely lacking.
I have considered installing clip type rod holders on the ceiling of the car, so I could just clip the rods in and go...haven't figured out how yet though :)
Anybody have a similar problem and a possible solution?
You might try carriing them in a section of 3 or 4 inch PVC drain pipe. It's lightweight, and you can put screw-on caps on the ends. You could bungee it on the top of the car, or hang it on the side.

I keep the passenger side rear seat folded down and put them in through the trunk.
In my old car I put velcro on the passenger side pillers to hold them in place.

I've got a VW Golf and I lay my 7 1/2 foot one-piece from the floor of the front passenger side angled up toward the driver side back seat and I have never broken a rod to date. I often have a 5 1/2 footer laying right next to it and it has never been a problem, even with the occasional passenger sitting in the seat. Hope this helps.

I just used to place one end in the backseat, and the other end in between the front seats with the front of the rod sitting up by me.

Back in my college days when I had a compact I used to put my rods underneath my wiper blades coming and going from spot to spot, when it wasn't raining.:)
As far as long distance transport of said rods, you might want to look into a ski rack holder for the top of your car if a mount fits.

I used to buy a piece of 2" or 3" diameter PVC pipe with caps for the end to transport fly rods. Get it at home depot etc. You could then strap it down to the roof. Tip: Glue one end cap closed and leave the other cap loose. It will fit snug enough to stay on. If not wrap some tape around the pipe to build up the diameter.

I don't know, but if I was able to figure out how to score in a Fiero back in the day, you can figure out how to get those rods in the car!

I don't know, but if I was able to figure out how to score with a 300lb girl in the backseat of a Fiero last weekend, you can figure out how to get those rods in the car!

Yeah, I gotta say...that's pretty impressive. As much as I wouldn't want to see it, I dont know if I could look away.
Right now I'm between ideas.
I like this:
(Rodloft, around $100 bucks, I'll build my own system as theirs wont quite work)

Mostly because it's badass. It's sorta like havin a gun rack in the back of your truck. I never have to take my rods out either, which is a problem right now...I'm always afraid they are going to get broken. (I currently just lay across the back seat, or fold the seat down, but it's a pain when it's more than just me and my tackle box and bookbag...we take my car on trips because of the gas mileage).
But I also like the idea of the PVC...problem is, it's gonna interfere with my fuel economy.....second problem is I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my rods up here all the time.
So, I'm between ideas.
The other problem with Rodloft is that it wont allow the length of my ultralight one piece rods. My noodle rod sections just BARELY fit.
