I happen to pass by Fighting Island on the Canadian side and was surprised by the flats and potential fishing grounds on the east side of the island. Has anyone fished fighting island on the canadian side across from Wyandotte? Seems to me this area would be great for large bass and blue gills as well from what I have seen. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bass, gill's, lots of pike and some good size muskies call that area home!

Canadian Hunter, any particular area that I should try? Planning on taking my 8 year old nephew for a day of fishing and this area looked absent of boat traffic unlike the American side. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Carl

Pick a weedbed and start casting, just be careful the island(weve referred to it as Turkey island) with the duckblinds down the side is very shallow along the entire length. This a good spot for pike, the southern end of Fighting usually has a good weedbed that is good for a little of everything, but especially some nice smallies.

Islander,

I believe those duck blinds like the east side of the Island. Canadian Hunter said it best. BE CAREFUL. Make sure that you stay within the channels near the island. until you get to a place that you may want to fish. Most of the places are shallow and have a TON of rocks.

You can also try the following places (In order from North to South)

1. Dunbar and Sullivan (AKA: Stoney Island) This is an island located just a a couple of miles south of Fighting Island and less than 1/2 mile east of Grosse Ile. Casting near shore with Rapalas seems to do the trick.

2. The Cofferdam (AKA: Hurricane Hole). This is an area that was dredged out to allow for the compensation of water when freighters travel down the Livingtone Channel. Stick to the back corner near the Rope Swing. There are alot of weedbeds which make for some great Pike fishing. When you enter this area you will be able to see the east side of Grosse Ile. Stay to the extreme east side. This is the deepest area of the Cofferdam. Fishing this are during the week is recommended. This is a popular anchorage for the locals on the weekend.

3. Crystal Bay and the Horseshoe.. Head south from the Cofferdam until you come to the Hole-In-the Wall and then make a turn to the east. You will see the Horseshoe to the south and Crystal Bay to the North.

4. Dynamite and Fox Islands. This area is actually the South End of Stoney Island. Weedbeds make for some great Pike fishing and some killer perch fishing in the spring. Use Caution when navigating this area. It is quite shallow if you get outside the channel.

5. The Cross Dike. This is an area popular with the local as an anchorage on the weekends. This area is just south of Grosse Ile and less than 1000 yards from Sugar Island. THis area is extremely productive for Pike. Try casting along the dike using Firetiger and Silver/Black Rapalas.

Hope that helps. There are a ton of places to fish near Fighting Island. These are just a few that seem to produce. I have several aerial photos that I may be able to find and send you.
