My wife and I are heading to the U.P. in a few weeks and plan to camp somewhere near Munising. Has anyone camped up that way before? We are basically going to do a little sightseeing and saw that they run a glass bottom boat that might be cool to check out. Would anyone recommend anything else to see up that way?

Thanks!

My wife and I toured the coast around the UP about 4 years ago. We hit most of the major state parks and were surprised that we needed reservations at a few of them. It's hard to say what to see. You just have to open your eyes to see its all the perfect part of the world. Munising Falls and Pictured Rocks come to mind right away.
Take a day to play in Superior.

That's kind of the plan, we are going to head towards Pictured Rocks and see what we can do along the way. I think I'm even going to get a few hours of fishing in:D

One note: be SURE and take some GOOD insect repellent with you. We were attacked by hordes of blackflies up there, one year while trying to fish around the 4th of July..... they literally crawled in the eyelets of our shoes trying to get us! Even with long sleeves 'rubber banded' shut at the cuffs, they crawled between the buttons!. We had 'just regular ol' bug dope' with us that time...... NOW we carry high 'deet' bug dope .

Have a GREAT time ! It's wonderful up there !!

Howdy-

The nice thing about the UP is that you're pretty much within a day of everywhere.....

May want to check out Fayetteville; neat buildings from 1840's.

Be sure to hit Grand Marais (that'll be East from you) on Lake Superior.

Check out Tahquomenon Falls and Paradise.

Visit the Seney National Refuge.

Where ever you go, keep your eyes open at night for the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). They are spectacular up there....

Don't know where 'home' is, but on the way back if you drop down the west side of the Lower, try to hit Cross Village. They have a great place called 'Legs Inn" errected in the 40's by a Polish immigrant (Stanley Smolak). The entire interior is furnished in driftwood he gathered; the bar is one solid driftwood log.

If you are going to be up in the U.P. you have to go to the Techquamenon Falls(I'm sure I butchered that spelling). I took my wife there on our honeymoon and she loved it. Actually we spent 9 days on our honeymoon in the U.P. hitting all the attractions. One of the coolest trips up north I've taken. For all you yoopers, you guys truly do live in Gods country. I envy you. I went on a fishing trip up there about 8 years ago and one place that sticks in my head that we camped at was Seney State campground. It was a rustic campground stuck back in the middle of nowhere. There was a lake right there that was pretty decent pike fishing. There is plenty to see up there if you appreciate nature. Hope you and your wife have fun! :)

Rookie1, thanks for starting this thread. We will be camping in the UP also from June 3-7 and were kind of clueless as to what to go see. Have a lot of ideas now, Gotta love this site!

We're camping by Germfask

Rookie1, a couple of my favorite camps between Munising and Grand Marais are Kingston Lake and Twelvemile Beach. Both are just off 58 between the towns. Another area worth spending some time at is Chappel Beach. This is about a two mile hike from the parking area for Grand Portal point/ Chappel Rock. Chappel Falls can be seen from the trail and the beach is nice white sand between the cliffs. There is a campground there for backpackers and you would need a permit in advance to camp there. From the beach it is about two more miles to Grand Portal Point and the real cliffs. This is an excellent and easy hike and well worth the effort to see the cliffs and Superior from 200 feet up.

If your in Munising a must see is Miner falls. It's just east of Munising, it's a short hike on a very good trail. It was a very pleasant surprise. I thought it was much nicer than Munising falls. You just can't get as close.

"kitchitikipi(the big spring) at indian lake" is very cool. It's near Manistique (sp?)

Big springs west of Manistque is a place to visit. you could spend a lot of time in th Yoop, thats in years seeing all the cool, neet, and awsome places nature has seen fit to give us. Then there is all the man places. Like Fayette the old pig iron smelter town, south of Garden off US2. The mine in the Norway area, Just about any thing you would want to see. Bugs are starting to get real bad and the ticks (spyder mites) are out.

Rookie 1,

There is an undeveloped road between Grand Marais and Munising that has a number of campgrounds on it. Depending on what comforts and ammenities your looking for I'm sure you can find something. At least they were there the last time I was through there about ten years ago.

Thanks to everyone for the information. It sounds like there will be plenty to see and do, can't wait to go!
