Do Salmon eat perch once they hit Muskegon Lake?
I am thinking whats being marked is likely walleye but was just curious.
Perch fishing is better than it has been in years on L Huron. Salmon numbers are very low........
Coincidence? I doubt it.

Thats a good point. Also that the green ladderback plug has been good I guess would also indicate that.

We have caught several salmon and lake trout with perch in them. One trout we caught was about 15 miles out, caught it on a three color lead core, and it had a fresh 10" perch in it. Go figure that out.

Another reason for more perch is the lack of alewives in Huron. Alewives prey heavily on perch fry and the two don't mix well for that reason. It doesn't affect adults but it affects survival of newly hatched perch.

:yeahthat:
Salmon and perch don't really hang out in the same type of areas in the lake. Salmon prefer to suspend over deeper water and perch hug the bottom in shallower waters. I suppose if the oppurtunity presented itself a salmon would eat a perch but I think they much prefer Alewives and other oily fish to pack on the pounds. I think Walleye/pike are more of a threat to perch populations.

lake trout are huge perch eaters from the time the water gets cool enough for them to move into shallow water.

Best way to find out is to catch a perch and use it for bait while salmon fishing.Make sure and check legailities of this 1st so you dont get into trouble. For the record I have never seen a perch inside any of the salmon that I have ever caught but I wouldnt rule it out.Im sure if the water is cold enough they will wander into shallow water to feed and there mouth is open at the sametime a perch or 2 might get swallowed.Since they live in both the same water colum and have the same preferance temp pike, bass, and walleye probaly eat more perch than any salmon.Perch for pike bait:tdo12:Therefore I would consider them more a threat to perch salmon.Lake Trout are eating machines also and will eat them.

salmon do eat perch in Lake Huron, and perch eat salmon..... eggs
Since salmon spawn in the rivers and not at the sametime as perch Its doubtfull that perch eat many salmon eggs unless the eggs are on a hook.

Perch countdowns used to take alot of kings in Oscoda. I'm sure all salmonoids eat perch if they get the opportunity.
