Had a huge spinner fall last night that lasted for 1.5 hours.

Caught a 19-20 inch beauty and a nice 15 incher. Fished for a big one for 30-40 minutes but could not hook up. Reflection from a house(tv) I think played games with me. Every time I fished for him he never fed, but when I would move away he would start feeding. I think he saw a shadow of me or my rod/line?? Tried a couple angles but same thing. Late in night I hooked into two hogs that were heavy and would have been 19-20 incher plus but they came unhooked. Used a very large gaudy orange bodied furry white winged fly last night that was very effective.

I think this was the last leg of the hex for us last night and will retire the rod till next year. we had a very good year both great hatches and quality fish. Good luck to everybody chasing the hex.

Beer and Nuts,

I was thinking of heading up tomorrow night for one last go at it. I thought this hatch would last up to 2 weeks. Is there no truth to that? Rusty Gates at Gates Lodge was saying that we could expect a 10 to 14 day run of the big bugs. If it's going to be over soon, what would be going on the weekend of the 4th. I'll be up that way for that weekend. What can I expect to be in the water at that time?

thanks

I can assure you that the hex will continue on for many days as Rusty said, The area that Beer and nuts is fishing get's bugs early in the season. I can assure you that much of the mason tract hasn't had a spinnerfall yet. the area that I fish probably hasn't had an emergence, don't know for sure but as of the other day no known spinnerfall yet.
You can't stick in one area for the two week period, hex blow throught the south branch pretty fast. one or two nights could be it for a quite a few stretches.

Weezer,

Don't know if you got my e-mail or not, but I was wondering what the best way is to gain access to the back side of the Mason Tract.

What do you reccomend? Going down the 2 track that is just past Chase Br??

Hey weezer is right about the SB. Sure the hex will last 2-3 weeks, but you never know where it will happen, but you can guess correctly just by word of mouth and calling around and weather. If the Mason Tract has not had the Hex to its full extent I would be heading there tonight just because it tends to move downstream-anybody have info. on Mason Tract fishing last few nights???

I believe the North Branch is a later hex hatch stream too, so that would be a good bet, I would think any stretch that has not had a good hatch will start tonight and finish up by this weekend and than trickle effect up into the 4rth. Just need to call around and check reports. This is the reason some find it frustrating "chasing the hex!!"

Most all the Mason Tract can be accessed by the Mason trail(two tract just passed Chase, north side) its at least 12 miles long, no signs but you can get to the Castle, High Banks, and a few other places you can park and then walk a ways down to the river. To get to Rainbow Bend: turn right at the dirt road before Chase (150 yards on the south side of Chase) take it down east at least 4 miles, to the four way intersection and turn left down there about 1 mile(till it dead ends) is Rainbow Bend(nice stretch). Never can remember the name of roads-I just know where I'm going:D

Good luck and if I here anything, I'll report back.

Beer,

Do you know what marks the end of the no kill area on the Mason tract?

The north branch would get hex before all other area rivers, it gets the Drakes first, tricos etc. I hear that the hex activity is minimal.
Binkley, for the most part the public access to the masaon tract is up that 2 track, There area c ouple of access points if you head up Hickey creek rd, to willows and Leline rd.
Beer and nuts, The Hex hasn't really hit the lower mason tract yet, Drakes and stones are still dominate.
I'll be on the mainstream tommorow night, then probably work my way towards the holy water for next week, The South Branch is too hard to pinpoint without fishing it every night.
