Winter river fishing on the Huron?

May be a silly question, but what do smallmouth, largemouth, pike and such do in rivers in the winter? Is fishing still possible? I would think if you're silly enough to stand in freezing water in December, you would be able to catch fish. My theory is that if you can catch fish while ice fishing, you would have a better chance catching river fish in the winter, since the access to them would be better than ice fishing? Am I all wet?

My hidden agenda is to do some wading in the Huron over Christmas break.
