Stupid question... yes.... but I was fishing late last nite and while I'll in the middle of a stream somethings growling at me in the woods on shore. Turn my headlamp on and I see four eyes up the tree and two at the base. The eyes seemed about coon size but every other time I have run into coons at nite i only hear them scampering up the tree.

You bet they growl...along with a mutitude of other sounds. Raccoons are very vocal critters.

The Indians called them little bears. You obviously were facing a sow with cubs...and apparently got the same treatment that a bear would give you.

Coons can be amazingly bold and aggressive, in my experience. On several occasions I have had to "play hockey" with coons 1/10 my size (20 lbs vs 210 lbs) and they kept coming back for more licks...2-3-4 times.

No doubt in my mind that I would have been seriously chewed if I didnt defend myself. They can be very aggressive, indeed.

not only do they growl, but they also hiss.

they are mean little guys. i had one in my garage that came in while i was welding of all things. he was after the garbage can. i stomped my foot, clapped my hands, nothing...wouldn't leave. i tossed a wrench at him, he looked up at me, hissed and started moving TOWARDS ME. I was lucky I had a 22 in the garage.

mean little buggers.

a cornered good-sized boar can be downright dangerous, as many a dog has found out.

We see grey foxes behind our house almost nightly. They give a wide berth to any raccoon . The coons are very aggressive and often growl or chase anything that gets near. One time we saw two young coons double team a skunk. They came running full speed from out of nowhere and hit that skunk at full speed.:confused. The skunk ran off dazed but never sprayed.:yikes:

While sleeping in our tents a couple yr ago it sounded like a fight between some prehistoric whatever. It definetly got our attention. Kind of eeriee, but pretty cool too.
