:) Your 25 footer is probably the best for Erie it can get quite rough with any wind. you will have an excape from the sun also. I usually launch at Bolles harbor, its the last Monroe exit heading south. They have about 20 slips, so launching goes fast even when its crowded on the week end. The sign for the freeway exit is the La Plesance exit. there are a couple of stores a little way past the entrance to the boat launch to get bait, ice and whatever you may need. Its hot now so you need to go out far enough out that you better get an Ohio licence (available at the first store on the left past the launch.). A GPS is a big help also, you couldn't see shore or the stacks from out by the shipping channel sunday as it was quite hazy. All you need to do to find the fish is look for groups of boats, move to the outside edge of the group of boats and start fishing. you can drift or troll, what ever you choose. (Jet-Skiis dont go out that far,,THANK GOD!) Have fun.

Beemerman,
That store you are talking about that sells Ohio licenses, is that at the marina? Could you give me the name of it. I'm interested in venturing out a little further in Ohio waters. How much is it for a Ohio license? Thanks for the info!

The license will cost you 24 dollars for a seasonal, I believe they also sell licenses by the day. Matthews Bait store is on the right side of the road and I think its Lake Erie Party store on the left, of LaPlaissance Rd. Cabelas also sells Ohio licenses. Good Luck!

T-T,

An Ohio license is really not needed to fish the lake, unless you plan on coming back a few times, there are plenty of eye's in the MI side of the lake. This past weekend I fished both sides of the ditch and came to this conclusion, and by no stretch am I a genius. Fished Stoney point, friday 3 man limit in 2 hours, came off the lake and filled the boat back up with fuel approx 6 dollars worth of gas, sat fished West Sister 3 man limit in 2 hours, filled boat up afterwards for sunday on the water, approx 26 dollars, now you do the math. So IMHO, fishing is great right now on erie, so just get out there and get some of them and have fun..It sure is nice going out in Ohio waters and just kicking back with no crowds, very relaxing........:D

Hey walleyeman,
We're practicaly neighbors, I live in Romulus just down the road from New Boston. Maybe I could follow you out one time to see how you get these limits ;) I just started to fish Erie for walleyes and I have not yet learned the finer points of this technique yet. I'm sure having fun trying though!!

T-T,

The best launch to use right now is Bolles Harbor it's a DNR operated launch and very well run although I've only used it once, but I also understand that you don't want to be there after a certain time I think 11pm or you'll recieve a gift from the DNR called a ticket. Anyway, there are many places to fish when launching there. You can get em right outside the harbor, about 3 miles south is Luna Pier, 2 stacks is north of bolles, stoney pointe is a about a mile or two north of the stacks and fermi is right there by the pointe. Most important look for the pack of boats and generally they are on some fish. I personally don't like the crowds so I like to look elsewhere for some fish, a good fish finder is a must, like my dad says, "If there ain't no fish here, why fish here"?

I have been fishing Erie in that area for about 20 years.
I usually run out of Sterling but since it is down for the
season I have put in the raisin river at the front st exit.
The ramp area is about 5 feet and once you get into
the river its plenty deep, the only problem is there
is only one ramp. I have almost exclusively
fished between the raisin river and north of fermi
about 2 miles. I have never had to go to Ohio to find
fish because as Walleyeman830 said there are plenty
to go around. Take your boards with you for sure
and possibly the down riggers if you have small spoons
that you can run. Also, if you run harnesses take plenty
of crawlers because there are lots of Polish Coho and
Silver Bass. The easiest way to avoid these sub-species
for the most part is to stick with Hot-N-Tots.
I can say that bolles is probably the best bet for your
boat, since there is plenty of room for your float.
Just my 2 cents worth on Erie

how do you get to the launch?

cost?

is it better to go to than bolles-busy wise?

also-any no wake zone?

how long to get to lake?

1fife,

I'm not sure about the wake zone on the river, I'm pretty sure there is one though. As far as Bolles Harbor goes. They (DNR) run that place like a top, like I said I've only been there once and it was busy, it was like a production line. They have 4 or 5 people standing along the ramp site with walkie talkies and as soon as a ramp becomes open, they call a person standing by the next boat in line and tell him what # ramp to go to. Hardly a wait, nice ramps nice people, until after dark lol and a 4 dollar fee. I would not have a problem going there anytime........I will be out there from thursday after work, as long as it takes on fri (vacation day) and both days over the weekend. Got to love a women that says, "I want you to get as much use out of that boat as possible" cool ah.... She also cut the grass this evening so that to is a plus.... Will monitor 68 will answer to eyebuster...I'm out.

1fife, if you are referring to the ramp at Front st, it is
the first exit for Front. as soon as you come to your first
stop sign off of the free way turn right and the ramp is
about a couple hundred yards down on the right side.
Which is the south side of the river. I was last there
on a tuesday and no one was watching the ramp
or collecting fees when I went out and came in. There
is a no wake zone that is about 1/2 mile long and the
rest of the run is wide open. Overall I would say about
1 mile to the lake, but it gives you time to set up lures
on rods and make any adjustments that are necessary
before you get out in the lake. It probably took us about
10 minutes max to get to the lake from the ramp.
Also, if you have a boat over 19 go to the Bolles ramp
because there is not a lot of room to manuever anything
bigger. The ramp is very very safe if you have anything
smaller, i would not reccomend it unless if had not already
launched there myself. The lot has about 30 parking
spots for trailers and was not filled when i came back in,
which was at 2pm. There were only 6 there when launched
which was at 8 am. I can say that i would not go there
on a weekend because i think it could get pretty crazy.
Only during the week. Bolles on the weekend.

If you go out of Bolles Harbor make sure you stay in the channel all the way out past the last buoy. About a mile out. Don't make the mistake of trying to go north too soon Lots of sandbars. If you go on the weekend just follow the other boats until you see them making their turns either north to stoney point or fermi or south to luna pier toledo beach area. One day Ohio tags are seven bucks. A good rule of thumb is if you are in water deeper than 24 feet you are in Ohio waters. But as everyone says There are plenty of Walleye in Mich water. Your bigger boat is best, Run your boards and riggers troll between 1.5 to 2.5 mph. Hot-n-tots in metalic colors and chromes. wigglewarts in bright and dark colors will be great on the boards. Small spoons like scorpion stingers and even flatfish are great on the riggers. On the boards run shorter lengths early say 50 to 70 feet as the sun rises higher lenghten them out to at least 100 and I sometimes run 150 feet. Good luck and give a shout to Rippn' Lips on 68
