A friend called and invited me for a boat ride up to St. Clair this weekend. We left Gibraltar around 11 am and pulled into Jack's Waterfront about 12:00.
The ride up was nice. Saw alot of boats channeling their fishing effort in the following areas from South to North:
Trenton Channel (In front of Horse Island)
BASF (Jigging and Handlining)
Great Lakes Steel (Handlining)
Shipping Channel/Lake St. Clair (North of Peche Island)
I am sure that these were only a couple of places. There have to be more on Lake St. Clair. Can anyone point them out for me?
After lunch and a couple of beers we jumped back into the boat and made a run up to Metro Beach. I could not believe the line of boats entering and leaving the Park probably people wanting to watch the boat races. Michigan Marine Salvage had several tow boats out to right a Offshore boat that had sunk just off shore of Metro Beach. (Wonder what had happened?)
Finally left Metro Beach and took a run toward Selfridge. We ended up floating just inside the yellow buoys near the Security Zone. It was a matter of seconds that we were asked to move by the Police. They had told us that there were rocks in the area. Actually it was the security zone around Selfridge. Which we had totally forgot about.
We needed some fuel for the ride back to Gibraltar (We already burned almost $200 worth already.) so we headed back to Jefferson Beach (Len's I think) to get another $200 in fuel. After fueling up the boat kept going straight in the marina and docked at the Beach Grill. (It was strange, I don't know what happened.) Since we were there we had a quick bite to eat and left for home.
The ride home was nice until we ran over a submerged log going about 65 MPH. Got back to the hoist and checked everything out. No damage to the trim tabs, props or lower units.
It has been along time since I have been up to St. Clair. You guys that fish and/or boat there are lucky. What a great lake!
Maybe next time I go up there it will be with my boat, trolling instead of siteseeing at 70 MPH.
