First elk hunt of season deemed a success
The Department of Natural Resources is pleased with the latest Northeast Michigan elk hunt.
DNR wildlife biologist Keith Kintigh said the first part of the fall hunt has seen 31 elk killed through mid-day Wednesday. The department issued 54 permits for the hunt.
A fall hunt has been used for the past three years to help control elk that are causing agricultural damage. The hunt is broken into two period, the first is from Aug. 25-29 and the second is from Sept. 15-18.
