Buy a premium quality line. Dont buy cheap line. And use the drag on your real. 10 or 12 lb test will do fine for trolling. For casting and jigging go with a lighter test and low vis. Good luck.

I think 6 to 8 lb test should cover just about any fishing that you may do in St. Clair. Make sure you have the drag set right on your reel and you most likely will have decent success landing anything that may take your bait. Also, I don't know what kind of rod you have but 6-8 lb test in combination with a 7-9 foot medium-light action rod might serve you nicely for catching any thing from bluegills and bass to pike and walleye. A rod on the 9 foot side will allow you to play out a fight with anything larger that may decide to give you a tussle because it absorbs a lot of shock when a fish is fighting you. This is what allows you to use line that is a little lighter. Hope this helps a little bit and Good Luck.
