Looking to get a .22
would like a semi auto
have $250 to spend-what would you get
pro and cons of some models
Ruger 10/22, it's probably the one that you're going to hear the most about. The reason is, there are a TON of aftermarket parts for it, from bull barrels to 50rnd clips.
THere's probably more 10/22's out there than any other brand of 22 IMHO

hard to beat the ruger 10/22.
I have a 10/22 and a Remington 597 and the 10/22 is just built better. The factory clips for the Remi are garbage, and it just seems to be built cheaper. The Remi is a bit cheaper than the ruger for a reason I suppose. In Remingtons defense, The 597 I have was it's first year of production I believe.... they may be better now some 10 years later. Watch the sales at places like duhams.

Get a .22mag. Gander Mtn has a bunch of guns (new and used) and they usually have a pretty good sale about this time of year (I think).
I have a Marlin A60 (THE No.1 selling .22). It's lighter than the Ruger. So if you're going to carry it around for squirrel hunting, pick it up first and take note of it's weight.

That's about what I spent for my Browning Buckmark .22LR pistol. Semi auto with 10 round magazine. It's compact, accurate and fun to shoot. Just a thought...

If you look, im sure you can score a marlin 60 for under $100. They are tube feed so mags to lose or load. Mine shoots very well with a $20 pos simmons scope. A friend picked up a savage that hes happy with, but again I dont like the magazine, it hangs to low.

Marlin 60 and Ruger 10-22 are both fine accurate rifles. Both are durable, and dependable. I have owned both...still own a Ruger. I just prefer a clip fed rifle for what I do with a gun. Plus like has already been mentioned you can basically make the Ruger look or shoot like anything you want.

Marlin can claim there #1. But is hard to beat the reliablity of a 10-22. carl

If I were to by one right now it would probably be the Marlin model 60.

I would have to agree, I've got one as well. Nice guns. Fun to shoot.

Another vote for the 10-22. Plus if you want something a little different I saw some with digital camo stocks on them.

Ruger 10-22s.....dont shoot any better than a Marlin 60 or 597 out of the box. They are nice if you want to add accessories..like larger magazines....The Marlin will hold 15 rounds. the 597 SS I have shoots great with Federal match ammo. which I also use to hunt squirrels. Works great. If you want 50 rds and spray and pray the 10-22 is for you. I prefer the accuracy before blast-o-lah!.........But everyone has their idea of what the gun is for.

10-22 or the Buckmark. I have both, great guns, I love the 10-22 more though. That's right, I said it, LOVE!

My out of the box 10-22 with a scope will shoot 3/4" groups at 50 yards. While the others may very well be more accurate I would hardly consider the 10-22 accuracy as "spray and pray" I can't remember ever missing a squirrel with mine.

My wife won a Henry .22 in a raffle. We went to Cabelas this weekend and picked it up. Took it back to her parents place and shot it. What a cool little gun, especialy for her. We are going to put a scope on it a little later, definately a nice gun.

T/C also makes a nice auto .22 - the Classic. I have the classic benchmark (10 shot mag) but that's a little outta the price range... But there's the classic and the sporter. Check it out!!

I've got the Rem 597. It's been a decent gun, but IMHO it doesn't compare to the 10/22 or the Marlin. The next one I buy will be the Marlin or the 10/22.

I have the Rem. 597 in .22 mag. Its a newer model and I have had no problems with it. The trigger pull was heavy but I replaced with an aftermarket hammer. Cut the pull 1/2. .22 mag are higher priced then th .22 but I love it.

I have an old Model 60 Marlin... I've had to do more work to that POS to get it to cycle... Unless you are literally shooting mini mags or stingers it'll stovepipe something fierce.. I ended up replacing the extractor claws as well as a few other action components... Granted it is a 70's vintage firearm that hasn't been treated the best... tends to get a lot of lead / fouling build up in the extractor slots and top edge of barrel to receiver.. bolt won't go fully into battery and it'll fail to extract from chamber...
I bought a 10/22 DSP last winter... Out of the box off the bench with an old 4X weaver I was putting a full magazine in 1/2 to 3/4 inch circle... Cycles reliably with just about every ammo type I've put through it... If you want to leave it stock it's a $160 firearm... or you can build an unlimited for thousands... possibilities are nearly limitless with the 10/22...
I have no experience with a brand new Mod 60 but if it is cheaper, cycles reliably and meets your needs, then why not...
Personally I'd love a new 77/22 but thats a bit more than I can spend at the moment...

If you can afford a couple extra bucks you can pick up the 10/22 target model for just over 300. It has a heavy hammer forged barrel and target trigger all set up. Cheaper than you can put one together yourself. I own one.

a friend of mine got a russian TOZ at the gun show a few months back, paid 120 for it,came with 4 clips. He got the bolt model and the damn thing shoots as good as my CZ and that CZ is sweet.CZ has a better trigger and better finish and bolt is smoother.they had the semi auto version for 140 with 4 clips. If your looking for a cheap shooter you might want to look at them.

I bought a used 10/22 for $75 and spent $125 on ebay for 17hm2 barrel and heavy bolt and shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the whole clip it is so accurate I can shoot a squirrel in the eye, no kidding. And with the balistic tips you don't have to worry about wounding one, and just downright fun to shoot.

I have a few. My first gun was a Marlin Mod 60....good cheap gun, cheap being the key word! It has seen thousands andthousands of rounds and has been rarely cleaned. Accuracy was never stellar and is worse today, probably no fault of the guns. I'll keep it forever but it never sees the field today.
I also have a Ruger 77/22mag. Fantastic little rifle. Pricey but classy without being too pricey.
The last one is a Remington 597 laminated Heavy Barrel in .22lr. This thing flat out shoots and sells for about $100 -$200 less than the heavy barrel 10/22's. the old magazines were junk but that has been fixed for the most part. Mines bone stock for now, topped with a 4-16 Simmons.
I do like the 10/22 Deluxe a lot...my next rimfire rifle for plinking and hunting. This one has the checkered walnut. I'm not a big fan of the standard 10/22, only because I don't like the stock...the curved butt plate does not work for me. If I were going to modify the gun though, the bare bones cheap model is the one I would buy. Makes for the perfect inexpensive platform for custom parts.

Cabelas has a walnut replacment stock for the 10/22. I bought one for my target model for $79.I didnt care for the laminate one it came with. Its a nice stock. Will post a picture. The walnut stock for a standard 10/22 barrel is 69 I believe.

My 10-22 has "Made In The 200th Year of American Liberty" stamped in the barrel so that tells you how long I've been shooting it. Has never, and honestly I mean never, jammed a shell. Accurate yes. But the trigger is truthfully not very good. Neither is the model 60 so you do get what you pay for. In that price range, easy choice, 10-22.

I have the Remmington 595 .22lr, I put a bushnell dusk to dawn 3-9x40 on it. I have 2 magizines for it both 10 rounds each. It shoots accurately and is durable. I like the synthetic stock it has as well. I got it at Cabelas back in 2002. I have no complaints and I paid around 200 out the door for it.

The only issue I have with my 10/22 is that it costs me money... I love to shoot it and all of those aftermarket parts sure add up in a hurry.. first it's the extended mag release and the extended bolt release and then the hammer and trigger work then there are the green mountain barrels and so on and so forth.... so much fun.. so little cash :dizzy:

I have a Remi 597...I love it. It's a semi-auto, I've had no problems. I got it at MC Sports about 4 or 5 years ago. Check around and you could save a few dollars. I saw the same gun at GM and it was $50.00 MORE. Good Luck!
