I've just been given to old penn 209s. Drags definitely need replacing. Anyone know how to get at them? Hate to admit that I can't figure it out, but have not been able to get the handles off. They have a handle screw, and handle screw retaining screw, but even with the retaining screw removed I have not been able to remove the retaining screw. I assume it has to come off to get the handle off so that I can remove the bridge to get at the drag washers? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I've checked that out before I posted my problem. You can find a great exploded view of all the Penn reels there, but it doesn't look like there is any on line way to find out how to do what I want. I have there service # and have been trying to call them and keep getting a message that it is temporarily disconnected. Being the stubborn cuss I am, sooner or later I'll find out how to get at drag discs. Hopefully it won't cost to much if I break something in the process.

Ok, I have a penn 309 in fornt of me right now that I just took apart, which is very simliar to the 209....remove the set screw first...then remove the handle retaining nut with a pair of pliers while holding the handle turning the retaining nut counter-clockwise and the handle will come off...then the drag wheel is screwed off and then you can continue to remove the screws holding the cover over the drag discs. If you have any problems with how it all goes back together, you can look at the exploded view at the penn site. Hope that helps and g/l!

Thanks Badboy. I thought that is how it should come off. I've had the handle in a vise between some rubber backing and had a channel lock pliers on the retaining screw but it didn't give. I've had it sprayed with some WD-40 now for about 4 hours so maybe now that I know that is the right way with enough muscle it'll go. Thanks again for the infor.
