Partridge outlook

I’m thinking that Partridge numbers are up this year in the northern UP. I have been seeing them every time I go out to bait bear. What does everyone else think?

I was "upnorth" this, spring turkey hunting, and we saw plenty of partridge and some woodcocks too! So I think it will be a good year!It`s ben some time since I`ve hunted them and I`m thinking of planning a trip this fall.

Sept 15th-16 weekend. Crawford Co. areas. I am sure theres a few birds to be found.

Been a slang term for them that goes way back. My dad was primarily a bird hunter through the 50's, 60's, and 70's. When I was growing up we always went "Pat" hunting.

My pals Dad used to take us near Pinconning and said "were going Pat hunting"....for us we didnt care what it was we were going HUNTING!.

A few weeks ago, I walked into a bunch of birds in my cedar swamp. There must have been 10-15 of them. That was the most I have seen in one bunch in a very long time. It reminded me of when I hunted grouse with my dad in the '80's.

I've always called ruffed grouse - partridge. Just the way I was brought up. No big deal. Grouse and partridge are different birds "officially". Then again, when I was hunting ruffed grouse/partridge I didn't really care what the official name was either! LOL

I saw more pats this spring than I've seen in recent history. Drumming all over. I'd sure like to run into some this season!

The season is supposed to be good according to Michigan Sportsmens News like another had mention grouse hunting seams to go on a 7 year cycle and this year is near the seven year cycle. My dad and never seem to have trouble finding them it is shooting the darn things that is a challenge. :)

FYI grouse cycle on a ten year time frame throughout the midwest and Lake States with the cycle heading west to east from Minnesota thru Wisconsin and finally Michigan. Michigan peak years are nearest those ending in 9 or 0 so as you can see we are just now coming out of a cycle bottom( 4 or 5) with a few years of growing numbers ahead of us.
