I have 2 areas, within 20 miles of home that I am going to scout this week, I hunted one area last year but found it late and didn't get to scout until after season, it has lots of promise. The 2nd area I found while driving trails trout fishing, it looks to be very promising and I am betting not much hunter traffic because the terrrain is very hilly/sandy, with about a mile hike to get to crick bottom/swamp area.
Man this cold weather switched my gears from fishing to hunting in a minute. After suffering a broken clavical this summer I have been very depressed on the hunting thing but I pulled my bow back two times last week, not where I want to be, but enough to know that I will be in the woods come OCT 1.
I am introducing my best friends boy to hunting this year, he has never been scouting or set up stands, look for runways and sign....this has my blood a pumping. I am more excited for him than anything.
Be safe fellow hunters, I have a feeling early season hunting is going to be great, with the drought, the deer will be on the move looking for food/water rather than piging out and basking in the sun chewing their cud all day.
Shoot straight, be safe and courteous.
Question.....on public land how far off the beaten path are you willing to walk/work for your deer hunting pleasure. In the past few years I have been getting in the swamps well over a mile, even got lost 2x last year:help: But it paid off well:corkysm55
