View Full Version : How high?

I bow hunt every year. Love it.
But I have a question...
I know that every situation is different, but as a general rule...
How high should treestand be off the ground? Or I guess a better question is... How high are yours? (And why?)
Thanks!

I like to have mine about 20 ft in the air. It's high enough to not normally be readily seen and the shot angle isn't to steep. I have hunted about 10 ft up before with good camo and I've also hunted far higher than 20 ft with a climber. I went higher with the climber because there wasn't alot of foliage. Just straight trees. I think about 20ft is a good rule of thumb for me though.

I go up 20 ft to the plat form on all stands. It works good for me

I also put most my stands at about 20-25'. I just make sure that I'm high enough in the foliage to hopefully not be silhouetted. Some people will also say that the higher you are the less chance a deer has at scenting you. I don't know how true that is, i just make sure that i have my cloths as scent free as possible. Also the higher you go, the higher you need to aim on the deer to hit both lungs = a smaller target.

Mine are 15' - 20' to the platform.

I try to stay a minimum of 18 feet up. There is a different air current that seems to keep your scent higher, instead of floating down in front of the stand.

No less than 18 Ft. typically..Try to stay under 25'...Some setup call for different heights..I got one set in a young maple on a Crp field tree offers great cover at only 13-15 ft...Good luck.

As a rule I go no lower than 18', if I am on a nice pine, I'll set up in this range or anything close with lots of cover behind me. My average set up is 18-25 ft- the higher I am up it seems like the more deer I see, less I get busted. The lower you are the more critical your actions are. You get away with a little more the higher you go. As someone mentioned earlier you have to aim a little higher but not to much.
I practice at the height I hunt.....that is the key, be comfortable and know YOUR range both height and your shot.

It really all depends on the terrain and cover for me.
I've been as high as 40 from the base of the tree but trail was 15-18 ABOVE the base of the tree (steep ridge side) and as low as 8 in a brambly old apple tree in a funnel.
Flat terrain and open lanes I'll take 20-25

Min. of 20'...no matter what. Even if the foliage is still on.

I rarely go above 12-15 feet. I hunt trees with good cover such as pines or cedars, and watch the wind. I've had deer right at the bottom of my ladder many times and they never knew I was there.
Like Justin I'm not in the stratosphere. For me, 14-16 feet works well. I used to hunt higher but as the years increase my hunting height decreases! Safety is more of a concern and I've fallen in love with the clilmbing sticks. They work great but they won't get you to the nosebleed heights. John-Ypsi

12-20 feet depending on the tree, terrain, and type of stand.

For bow I typically go 20' and under ,but with gun when I typically use my climber I go 20+.

my location says it all for me....
becareful the higher you go the steeper the angle across the vitals.......practice from this height with a 3-d target....

I usually try to place the treestand no higher than the tree is! Well, I use anywhere from 12-25 feet depending on the tree. If possible I like to be 20' or more. Seems I get picked off much less the higher I go.

It really depends on the cover of the tree you've chosen to go up,.. but as a general rule for me anyhow,.. I'm anywhere from 16-20 ft up there and I'm just fine. ;):D

18' to 25' ive been busted too many times less than that. not by scent so much as the deer seem to look up more than they used to and start doing the foot stomp to get you to move lol.

I go up about 15-20 feet depending on the terrain. If theres thick cover, I might be lower.
