View Full Version : How Many Shots
I read another post about a gentleman shooting 50+ shots in a day and talked about his rest wearing out. I have no issue with this at all but was wondering how many arrows do most shoot per day and what is the life span of a bow and string.
I typically shoot between 10-20 arrows 3 times a week from August through the middle of Sept. I then switch to my hunting arrows and broadheads and take 2 shots maximum until opening day. I always figure you get 1 shot and your not usually warmed up so you better make it count the first time. Based on this my string gets replaced once a year but probably only needs it every other year. Just wondering what others do and if you wear you equipment out fast or not.

I usualy shoot until I get tired. This is evident when my groups start to open up. Then I stop becuze its not productive for me anymore.
When I first start shooting it might be 20-30 arrows. As I build up strength it could be how ever many I can shoot in a hour.
I havent had anything wear out yet except my string and cables and loop. I replaced those last year with custom strings from bowman. They should last 3-4 years at least I hope. Just make sure you check it over once in awhile and make sure every thing is tight.
During seasons like you I shoot less. I usualy shoot one arrow at yardages from 20 -50. If I see signs my groups are loosening up then its time to take a night off from hunting and shoot.

Usually you'll want to replace the string at least every 2-3 years even if you shoot 20 arrows a year.
If you shoot a lot maybe even every year or more but you should see a physical difference in the string....fraying, strands cut etc.

I have had my bow for 4-5 years and I start shooting 2 months b4 opener and I don’t stop till the snow flies. I shoot 3 times a week and for an hour each day don’t know how many arrows. My string is going to be replaced next year it has minimal fraying, I keep it waxed though.

I shoot 30 arrows every other day this year. My last 10 arrows I hold at full draw as long as I can, then try to control my trembling and shaking muscles and make a good shot. In my mind I tell myself this is what its like when the adrenalin is kicking in a real hunting situation.

It's the quality of the practice not the quantity. That said, Kelly has it right. Shooting high numbers of arrows builds your stamina but unless each is carefully executed you are not maximizing your practices. You will ususally replace the string 2-3 times before you replace one set of cables. But it depends on the material, number of shoots and, do not leave your equipment in a hot vehicle. Can you say stretch?

I personally usually start shooting quite a few shots at first. 30 or so shots and then once I got comfortable with being at full draw I start to slow down cause like was stated earlier, you only get one chance.
We setup a little 3D practice course this year in my cousin's backyard and we have 5 targets. We have certain rules. The first one is there is no practicing beforehand and then we get to shoot one arrow at all four targets and then go tally up our scores, then we come back and shoot one final arrow to finish the round and then start over. Works pretty good and with the competition you get some honest to goodness pressure put on ya. Can be pretty never racking. The best way I've found to pratice yet. Only one shot per deer with pressure. Fun and beneficial.
