my neighbor and i have been shooting bows for the last 4 weeks in his fenced-in back yard. yesterday, while shooting, a police car pulls up and instructs us to put our bows on the ground and back away from them.

ok, so we do and the officer gets out of the car and begins to explain to us about the "laws" within the city limits and that he could write us a ticket if he wanted to. we didn't argue and we left it at that. he then proceeded- "GET THIS"- to tell us to go to the "city park" a block away and shoot there!!!!!! what kind of crap is that....we can't shoot in our own back yards, because he said a child may stray in front of us and be in danger, but we can go to a public park (i.e. - more kids around) and shoot there? it is still within the city limits!!!!!

what a crock......i think someone called on us.:fish:

Did you ask him if you could hunt at the park while you were at it?

Someone definitely called on you. Go down to city hall and check the ordinances. Then go around to the immediate neighbors and ask them if they have a problem with you shooting, if they say "no", keep right on shooting.

Cop sounds like a tool.

I know in the city of Southgate and Lincoln Park you are not supposed to shoot in your back yard. But then again it is only illegal if you get caught, it deffinatly sounds like somebody called on you.

A little common sense could go a long way. Some of these dumb laws need to be changed.

JSTFISH...................you criminal you. Sounds like one of your wonderful neighbors called. I would go to the city, and check there rules and regs., and ask questions. Maybe even go to the police department, and talk to the guy in charge. Going to the park suggestion, sounds ridicules.

Depends... in Coopersville there is a city park with an archery range. Is it possible this park has one as well?

I'm willing to bet that it is legal to shoot a bow in your back yard. Call City Hall and ask if there are any specific ordinances prohibiting such a thing.

Your not supposed to here either. We asked a cop who we knew shot in HIS own back yard, and he told us he would likely do the same that happen to you. Since then we found the free outdoor range in Romulus.

no range of any kind in said park....just a few climbing toys and swings for kids.

i'll play it on the safe side and just drive to the in-laws (grrrrrrrrr) and shoot on their 10 acres......and do a little scouting while i'm at it!!!!!!:evilsmile

Is the cop one of your neighbors? If not somebody called for sure.
